Take a blood test: Symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are quite different so if you are unsure i suspect he problem is not your thyroid.  If you were found to have an enlarged thyroid the problem could be either one and it could be mild enough that you would have no symptoms. Your regular doctor can examine you and tell you if you have an  enlarged gland and check your thyroid tests if necessary.

Do you mean TSH?: There is not a LSH test in the United States, but perhaps that is what they call a TSH test in Doha.  If you have a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) of 41 you are hypothyroid, however you would need to clarify this with your doctor.  Different countries sometimes have different measurements and names for their tests.  Sorry I can't be of more help!

Not at same time: Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid, hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid. You can't have both at the same time, but occasionally one can go from one to the other.  The most common cause for both disorders is autoimmune thyroid disease.  Depending on how the immune system is affecting your thyroid it can be over or underactive, or go from one to the other.

Not unusual: Although the opposite is more common (i.E converting from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism). You may have been misdiagnosed with hypothyroidism as both tend to have positive antithyroid antibodies and the early phase of hyperthyroidism can manifest with only TSH being low. Regardless, you should seek an endocrine evaluation and perhaps even a thyroid scan to confirm your diagnosis. Good luck.

Not common: The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is graves disease, an autoimmune disorder that stimulates the thyroid to be overactive. Another autoimmune thyroid disease is hashimoto's thyroiditis, in which the immune system is attacking and destroying thyroid function. Sometimes you can start with one, and it can evolve into the other. Also, subacute thyroiditis causes initial high thyroid that goes low.

Blood test: There are simple blood tests to look for either hypo or hyperthyroidism.  A TSH level is most sensitive for the diagnosis (low in hyperthyroidism, high in hypothyroidism).  A free T4 level is helpful if the TSH is abnormal.
