I'm : I'm sorry to hear you are having these symptoms.
After a multi-level laminectomy it is possible that you have developed spinal instability in the lumbar spine and if this is the case a fusion is one option, but not the only option.

I treat conditions such as yours on a regular basis and would be happy to examine you and review your imaging studies in order to discuss your condition and what options are available.

Generally a spinal fusion is reserved for instability or spinal deformity. Special tests can be ordered to determine if this is the best approach, or if a more conservative approach is appropriate. Age in of itself is not an indication or contra-indication for fusion, however, taking into account that you are 18, it is imperative that the proper work up is implemented prior to moving forward with any type of fusion procedure.

Accepted Answer

Varies : The outcome of resection of a tumor from your spinal column can vary significantly based upon multiple factors.  Certainly one of the possible poor outcomes would be to have pain unrelieved or even worsened after surgery.  I would discuss the likelihood of this happening directly with your surgeon.

Yes: As a spine surgeon i tell patients to sleep however they are comfortable.

Accepted Answer

Limited: Only a very small subset of patients will benefit from spinal fusion.  It is typically people with either instability or a condition that requires destabilization of the spine to fix another condition.  This is one of the hardest things to sort out when faced with a patient with back or leg pain - who will fall into this very small category.

General : While it depends on what type of spinal fusion you are referring to (cervical vs thoracic vs lumbar) and for what condition the fusion was performed (i.E scoliosis, degenerative, trauma, tumor), there are some general treatment options:  prescriptive pain medications and muscle relaxants, low impact exercise/ stretching/walking,  bracing, etc.  Speak with your surgeon regarding his/her preference.

NOT A "NORMAL": complication of spinal fusion surgery! Call your treating surgeon ASAP and report these issues!

Depends.: Follow the instructions given beforehand for the procedure. Obviously, don't drink alcohol or use recreational drugs.  Other limitations may be given, depending on how immediately it needs to be done. Check with the doc who ordered it or with the doc who is going to do it to be clear on this.  In an emergency situation, the requirements are different.

They are often prescribed in combination with other drugs such as NSAIDs, acetaminophen or caffeine.
