is endoscopy really required to find cause of gerd or stomatch ulcer etc. cant we find using ultrasound? endoscopy seems to be scary to go through :(

With the: present day anesthetic advancements endoscopy is safe and completely pain free! It also is the most accurate in the evaluation of upper GI problems including GERD and ulcers!

Accepted Answer

Different: these  are two  different  disease processes. You can have reflux from excess acid but it is usually a mechanical problem at the junction of stomach and esophagus.  Consider talking to a doctor and getting Egd

Accepted Answer

Yes: Anxiety can cause the autonomic nervous system to go into a state of override and lead to increased production of gastric acid which can erode the lining of the stomach leading to ulcer formation.  Inflammation of the stomach and duodenum can slow transit and lead to reflux.

Think you mean: barium, and it depends on what the "test" was.  This is something that can be easily answered by the ordering physician presumably your doctor.

Accepted Answer

Omeprazole, but...: The hallmark symptoms are heartburn and acid regurgitation, and there can be metallic or sour taste in the mouth, bad breath, and even cough, laryngitis and asthma symptoms.  Omeprazole (aka Prilosec) OTC taken once a day for 14 days should treat routine symptoms.  Any recurrence or persistence of symptoms needs to be evaluated by your doctor.

Accepted Answer

I am not aware: of the seasonal rates you mention however it is not unusual to see certain diagnoses during specific seasons. The histamine "exposure" has no relationship to the gastrointestinal disease you mention!

i am in so much pain and it is suspected that i have gerd or an ulcer. medication wears off and i'm in a lot of pain. what to do?

Try sipping: small quantities of milk (If you are lactose intolerant include "lactaid" tablets.) Also an oral antacid (for example Maalox, Gelusil etc) may help ! You failed to mention what medication you were started on and what is planned for tests to determine exact diagnosis! Over the counter H-2 blockers (eg Pepcid (famotidine) , Zantac&lt; may also help!

how long does it take to get an esophageal ulcer from gerd? 3 months? a year? several years?

Unknown: Since everybody is different, and gerd is complex, it is not known the exact time it takes to develop an ulcer in the esophagus from gerd. Depends on the severity, of gerd, your natural defense mechanisms to injury, diet, smoking, immune status, etc. Could be weeks, months, or years. Hope this helps!

can i take dantrolene if i have ulcers and gerd?
is it better in this case to use injections?

Accepted Answer

You can take it.: Dantrolene does not cause direct toxicity to the digestive tract, and therefore can be used with a history of Gerd and/or ulcers. Having said that, it can cause digestive tract side effects, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. If you need it for a particular reason, just be alert for the possibility of G.I. side effects. Good luck.

Accepted Answer

Yes: It takes 4-8 weeks to heal an ulcer if in fact that what is going on. Remember that it must be taken on an empty stomach. Typically 1 hour before a meal and should only be taken with water.
