Accepted Answer

Heat is good.: Not damaging to muscles unless heat is way too high  (usually not allowed on us heating pads) or if left in place for too long.

You : You won't hurt your kidneys but you can sure burn the skin on your back! ouch! i ask my patients with low back pain to use hot water bottles because they naturally cool off and you can't fall asleep and get burned.

i received a steroid injection around the area of my l5 on my back. is it ok to sit on a heating pad after? is there any contraindications?

Accepted Answer

: Heat causes vasodilation of the blood vessels. If you had not fully healed from any damaged blood vessels injured during the injection, you would risk increased bleeding in the area initially. This is why ice is used instead to limit bruising, as it has the opposite effect. After 6 hours you would be safe for the heating pad but limit the duration to no more than 15 minute intervals.

Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain is complex as there are several organs in the pelvis. The ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, bladder, appendix, intestines, colon and rectum can all be the source. Pelvic pain requires and examination to help organize the evaluation.

? muscle pain: Usually pain on that area is due to muscle strain or pulled muscles, but could be due to constipation causing excessive gas formation or in female due to gall bladder stones. You might wanna try tylenol (acetaminophen) and see how you feel. If you did not have bowel movement  you want to work on that, if these don't help, you might wanna see pcp.

Back pain: Many possible causes as simple as a back strain or as much complicated ones such as spine patology of the lumbar spine produced by degenerative disc disease, arthitis of the facet joints, bulging disc, spondylolysthesis with or without spondylolysis, olso extra articular spine pathology such as kidney pathology:kidney stones, enlarged kidneys and olso diseases of the vessels such as dilatation of the a.

: I personally feel that the risk of any skin cancer secondary to your exposure is very slim. You might have the hyperpigmentation for a while, however. See your dermatologist should any significant changes occur in the area of involvement

Livedo reticularis: Netlike rash (livedo reticularis) could be a normal variant with cold exposure. In this case it disappears once skin is warmed up. If it is a persistent skin pattern, some investigation & possibly a skin biopsy are needed. Livedo is a vascular pattern, meaning there is some inflammation of blood vessels, which can be seen in lupus, vasculitis, certain meds & others. Please see dermatologist.

Yes: The sciatic nerve can be irritated because of a herniated disc, arthritis that results in tightening of the spinal canal, falls, injuries, or other rare reasons (tumors, infections). Anti-inflammatory medications, alternating heat/cold therapy, physical therapy (especially with traction) can be helpful to relieve sciatic pain.

Accepted Answer

Not a good idea.: Any type of prolonged heat application to the fetus is potentially teratogenic and neurotoxic - avoid heating pads, saunas, prolonged hot-tub immersions throughout pregnancy!
