what can the dermatologists do about my blackheads & enlarged pores?

We can help!: Blackheads can be treated with a number of things, including a retinoid topical medication and, often, starting with some extractions (removal of the clogged pores).  The larger pores themselves are much more difficult to permanently fix; it is sort of the "holy grail" in dermatology, but things like photodynamic therapy and some topical medications may be able to help reduce their appearance.

does pro active really work for acne. my 8 year old has acne and blackheads. usin zapzyt now after everything else failed. dermatologist or pro active?

Proactive does work: it doesn't work for everyone but it does work for some people but if all of the over the counter stuff doesn't seem to be helping.  go see your pcp, they can give you some creams/gels to use that might be able to help her.  you can also try bentonite clay w/raw apple cider vinegar, I have heard that works pretty good too.  good luck

Improve not remove: Many options exist for cosmetic improvement and include anti-inflammatories, peels, exfoliation, lasers, resurfacing, bleaching, excision, grafting, fillers, and much more, scars vary in their severity and so do the treatments. See a plastic surgeon, dermatologist or ENT for options.

: I would go to uptodate.com and pay for 1 month subscription, read all about it and follow what they recommend. Lots cheaper than a Derm-well maybe not in Canada.  We only have 400 letters here to answer with.

i reacted badly to a blackhead peel and my skin peeled. it later scabbed and peeled to reveal the pink skin underneath. i have been applying aloe and sunscreen for a few weeks now but it is not healed yet. should i consult a dermatologist or wait?

No time?: Any licensed physician can handle all but the most severe cases of acne. I trust you're already using topical benzoyl peroxide 5% 2x/day; your personal physician can write for the oral contraceptive pill (if right for you), topical / systemic antibiotics, topical spironolacton, or retinoic acid derivatives. College / free health clinic can help. No time for any health care? Big change is needed.

Pore strip/ comedone: Extractor. Wash face w gentle cleanser 2x/day.  Use oil free products on face. No heavy foundations. Don't squeeze pimples / blackheads.  Avoid touching face (i.e., cradling chin in hands). Remove makeup before bed. Shower after strenuous exercise.  Consider otc products (w salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide). If &gt; mild acne see dermatologist (discuss meds, comedone extractor, pore strips, etc.).

Retin a (tretinoin): Retinoids or vitamin a derivative creams such as retin a, (tretinoin) differin, Atralin , and combination products such as ziana and epiduo will unclog blackheads and gradually clear them.Salicylic has a similar but mor elimited effect.
