Define constipation: Breast fed kids may go a little every feed or one bulky stool every 7-10 days & if soft they are not constipated. Most formula babies go 1-2xd. Any stool that is dried out is constipation & a sign things are not moving along fast enough. Gas is from air swallowed or gas produced by gut germs. Fussy is whatever baby feels pissy about often fatigue.

changed baby formula (cow's milk) at 6 weeks due to constipation. but now the soy protein based formula also constipates her (shes now 3 months). she cries when passing stool. her stool is s greenish in colour and the texture is quite hard.

Infant hard stools: are not uncommon. Although it is recommended to avoid supplementary foods until 4-6 months of age, often feeding a half oz of prune juice mixed with equal parts water will provide enough fiber and stimulant to remedy the problem and should not interfere with normal advancement of foods.

my baby is 5 days old and not passing stool since 2 days. also she is not able to suck her mother's milk. local doc is not allowing to feed her with formula milk as according to him it is causing constipation .can we give cow's milk to her?

I wouldn't: A 5 do may pass a smear every feed or a diaper filler once a week. If it is soft when they go it is not constipation. Formula is a fine substitute for mothers milk if there are problems with BF. It does not cause constipation in most infants &amp; it is not clear that is what is going on. If the kid passes dry rabbit pellets an ounce of prune juice 1-3x/d will loosen things up.

LACTOSE FREE: Almond, cashew, rice, coconut and hemp milk are excellent alternatives.

my son having an age of two and a half years having a problem of constipation after every week. and thus when he passes the stool its size is big and hard .we are giving him freash milk of cow and buffalo?what we do?

Milk: Milk is constipating. Please have our son evaluated by a children's medical specialist, a Pediatrician. His diet may be doing him harm, but there may be other causes. See a Pediatrician and have him properly evaluated. Stop trying to do this on your own. Get help.

Natural plugs: Apple sauce, bananas & rice cereal are the main constipators in most infants. Peaches, pears, plums & barley cereal are usually helpful in loosening them.Prune or apple juice(regular adult, not dilute baby) given in amounts of 1-2 ounces 1-2 x/day for a minimum of 3 days will usually loosen a kid.Good luck.

Stop the rice: Stop adding rice cereal to the pumped milk (good job on breast feeding, by the way!).  Keep breast feeding and keep the zantac (ranitidine).  Rice cereal is very constipating!  for reflux elevate the head of the crib.  In addition to constipation, rice cereal before age 6 months is related to obesity in later life.  
You may also try a glycerine suppository (found in the baby section).  After 7 days call md.

Milk: Most doctors recommend breast feeding until 1 year, if not formula, then whole milk after 1 year, low fat milk at 2 years.  Lactaid is only needed if your child is lactose intolerant or if you have a strong family history of lactose intolerance.

is tetra pack long shelf  life cow milk as good for babies as fresh short shelf life cow milk? the tetra pack milk may have some preservatives in it.

Maybe: From what I understand in the packaging of shelf-stable milk such as Tetra pack, there is no additional preservatives.  The milk is ultra-pasteurized, and the packaging is sterile, allowing long-term storage without refrigeration.  However, it is not recommended to start cow's milk products until your baby is at least 1 year old.

which is better soy based or cow milk infant formula?

Accepted Answer

Depends on situation: Some folks prefer the bovine protein as more human like & there is some question whether the soy lives up to its quality. That said, most kids would never have any appreciable difference in growth/development either way.The exception comes if a kid is intolerant to one. If so, the other product or a specialty formula like alumentum  would be less likely to cause GI symptoms.
