Shouldn't: It can be thought of as similar to a protein supplement (albeit a special kind). If other proteins don't upset your stomach, neither should probiotics. Can also usually take with some food (bread, fruit, etc.).

Probiotics: As your gut flora adjusts to the new bacteria you are putting into your GI system you may feel a reaction at first.  Please see your doc to make sure you have no medical conditions.  Doctor Ohira brand is a good probiotic.  Peace and good health.

what is an otherwise healthy 28 year olds risk of developing c diff infection from taking clindamycin for 7 days? im also taking probiotics, i have some stomach upset but google is scaring me!

Relatively low: While Clindamycin has been described as being involved in C Diff colitis, all antibiotics may induce a degree of diarrhea that is much more common than C diff colitis. If you had exposure to a person with C diff, either inpatient or in the community, your chances to develop same will increase significantly. Hand washing remains key in preventing transmission.

im taking antibiotics for a tooth abcess and experiencing upset stomach... should i be taking anything else like probiotics as well?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Many antibiotics can be very stomach unfriendly.  If you are allergic to penicillin, Clindamycin is generally regarded as the antibiotic of choice for a dental abcess.  
Unfortunately Clindamycin is very very mean to the belly.
I usually tell my patients to pick up some activia yogurt along with the antibiotic.  It generally helps keep the tummy rumbling to a minimum.

how do i get rid of bad breath caused by stomach? i take multivitamins, you gut this probiotic daily & recently started l-glutamine and drink half my weight in water daily. my oral hygiene is impeccable, no gum disease or cavities or coated tongue?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. Stop taking all the supplements you are ingesting as these may be the cause. If that does not help, it would be prudent to see a doctor. Wish you good health!

Yeast infections: I'm sure your personal hygiene is good. Vaginal yeast infections can be passed back and forth between sexual partners. Have you been checked for diabetes, HIV? Do you take corticosteroids as they can predispose you to yeast infections? Do you have an autoimmune disorder which can weaken your immune system?  Have a complete checkup including blood work by a specialist in infectious diseases

Try for a: refrigerated probiotic, or off the shelf if traveling.  Don't be overly concerned w/the numbers, i.e., how many billions in each dose.  Look more for a variety of ingredients, i.e., bacteria/yeast in each bottle.  PRE-biotics prompt the body to make PRO-biotics and can be good also.  Then you would look for l-glutamine which does not have to be refrigerated.  Peace and good health.

Possibly: I believe than in patients who are not significantly immunocompromised, symptomatic yeast infections in the stomach are unlikely.   I would suggest looking for other explanations.   Probiotics can be helpful for managing a host of conditions.   Look for options for getting off of the ranitidine.  Short term okay but long term  It too could be contributing to symptoms.
