Yes: Lymph glands in the posterior triangle of the neck, usually behind the ear drain infections usually from the external ear or ear canal.  They are usually firm, not larger then 0.5-1.0 cm and can be tender.

my 7 month old son has had a fever due to an ear infection. his fontanel became slightly swollen, small but enough to notice at an angle. a little bit above the rest of his head. no behavior changes er said not to worry. should i get a second opinion?

See below: Infant's fontanelle (soft spot) should be felt in sitting position.  If fontanelle still feels full or tense, seeking another opinion would be recommended.

Lymphatic fullness: When a person has an ear infection or sinusitis, the surrounding lymph nodes and lymphatic tracts fill with fluid/cells in order to mount an immune response. This can cause warmth, discomfort and slight swelling. It would be wise to have a Dr check your ears/nose for infection which can be treated with antibiotics. Saline nasal washes can also help clear the sinuses, and eustacian tubes.

Yes : Upper respiratory infections of all types can cause swelling of the tonsils, which are actually specialized for helping grow the cells that fight infection. The inner ear, or eustachian tube, can be thought of as part of the upper respiratory tract. Also, inflammation in the tonsils can actually lead to the blockage and fluid buildup that eventually leads to ear infection.

Absolutely: This is actually a very common reason for swelling of neck nodes along with sore throats. Depending on the extent of the infection, you could have either anterior (front) or posterior (back) nodes in the cervical region enlarge. This is actually a good response by your immune system. They wil go back to normal in 1-8 weeks after the infection has been cleared.

Possibly: The lymph nodes behind the ear are among the first to drain the ear region. Any infection if the ear, middle ear or outer ear, can often cause these lymph nodes to swell. As far back as the occiput is less likely, but still possible.

: Lymph nodes in the neck can become tender &amp; enlarged in the presence of infection in the head, ears, nose, and throat. This should resolve once your ear infection heals within the next 7-10 days. If it doesn’t, then further examination can be pursued. I don’t know about your personal risk factors for HIV, but lymph node swelling occurs in many conditions that have nothing to do with HIV.

Ear infection: One of the more common reasons for external ear infections is some type of trauma to the ear - like a cotton tip applicator or even injury from getting a hair cut or piercings.  Redness, tenderness, swelling, drainage from the site or ear should be treated to prevent an infection of the ear cartilage called Chondritis or Perichondritis.
