Probably: If you have a regular monthly menstrual cycle, you are probably ovulating and you can get pregnant.  If you have been pregnant, even though it was a miscarriage, then you can get pregnant again. If you have more than 2 pregnancy losses, then you will need more testing.

i had an abortion 12mths ago. if i get a period it lasts from a few hrs to 1 day and is usually light. although i suffer from polycyctic ovarian is this common? what blood tests can i do to check if something is wrong. i am also worried about my fertility

Anovulation?: Your irregular and light periods probably have nothing to do with the abortion.  They are probably from PCOS.  Women with PCOS frequently don't ovulate.  This results in irregular periods and makes it hard to get pregnant.   If you want to get pregnant, you should be seen and have tests ordered to find out if you are ovulating or not.   If not, there is medication to help you ovulate.  Best wishes

Personal answer: It's a tricky question in that each respondent would have to give his/her opinion on the matter. I am against abortions, period! i believe that each child is a gift of god, hence, it's our responsibility to accept that child as such. I fully realize that others may disagree with that, but i just  relay my opinion.

Difficult # to find: The biggest influence on the decline of Down syndrome births in the last 4 decades has been the introduction of oral contraceptives & or decision to undergo permanent sterilization. Many centers do not keep or record the reasons for the procedure.Some centers consider invasive sampling such as amniocentesis only if couples are likely to terminate even if screening tests were suggestive of ds.

Prenatal care: You need to be followed by your OB. Having HELLP syndrome un one pregnancy increases the risk in subsequent pregnancies, although lower risk than your first.

See below: There are risks with any procedures, but with this procedure the risk is very small. The major problem a woman has after an abortion   are muscle cramps and some minor bleeding. At about the 5 months old the child becomes technically viable, that is to say it can survive in an isolate in the ICU with lots of support. A down's syndrome child has a genetic abnormality. Please ask your md these ques.

No: This would be considered by most an elective procedure. Abortion for a mother with kidney failure who would likely die if it were not done would be considered by most therapeutic.

Still Possible: Pcos is defined by irregular menstrual cycles and signs of hyperandrogenism.  You don't have to have polycystic ovaries to have the syndrome. Infertility is commonly seen with pcos, but there is always a possibility of pregnancy if you happened to ovulate that month.  You may need to be placed on a medication called metformin to help with the Insulin resistance and help with ovulation.

Personal decision: Yes, your child has down's syndrome.  I have no idea how those children are treated in india. However, they are the most loving, kind people i care for. They have the capacity for love and joy unlike any of my other patients. Will the child require extra care and have different needs - absolutely. Only you can decide if you have the capacity to provide this and continue the pregnancy.

is polycystic ovary disease a syndrome?

Yes: Pcos is also called stein leventhal syndrome. Strangely, you don;t have to have ovarian cysts to have this disease. Symptoms include lots of things including acne, excessive hair growth, obesity and infertility.
