How so?: Do you mean that the bulge keeps yo-yo'ing in-and-out? That's the nature of hernias & will continue until the hole is (surgically) closed, or; do you mean the hernia was previously repaired & now recurred? Surgical repair with mesh should reduce the chance of this happening again.

Look for a bulge: If there is a bulge at the belly button that is larger when standing and bearing down, it may very well be a hernia. May be worth a visit to the primary care doctor for an exam. Urgency of appoint depends on duration and severity of symptoms. Hope this helps!

Possible: Let your doctor examine you , most of umbilical hernias do not need repair ( surgery ) how ever most likely you have incarceration , mental fat tissue got stuck inside , then you may need surgery , then  your family doctor  will refer you to a surgeon.

: You should be referred to a surgeon, not to the hospital. We only refer patient to the hospital for an incarcerated hernia which is an acute condition. Ventral hernia is common and surgeon can fix it outpatient as an elective surgery (not an urgent or emergent procedure). Many people have ventral hernia and they do not want to have the surgery.
