i went to the er for chest pain which  started with what i thought was a calf sprain. they did ct scan to rule out blood clot, so is it a sprain?

Possible thrombosis: Although it is not too common in younger people, it is possible to develop a blood clot in the veins of the legs.  This venous thrombosis could then break off and lodge in the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. The best way to assess for this is a ct scan of the chest.  The way to check for a blood clot in the legs is an ultrasound exam.  If these are both negative you might just have a sprain.

could this swelling be just a possible sprain? i was told last night that i have a possible blood clot in my leg and possibly that is why it is so swollen.  they checked and there wasnt any. i've tried everything to get it to go down but it hasnt and wont

Swelling : Swelling of legs is caused by various reasons. 
Blood clots, sprains, varicose veins and venous insufficiency, kidney failure, anemia etc.

Sprain usually occurs after an injury. It occurs on one side only unless both ankles are injured. 
Once blood clot is ruled out, especially in pregnancy the most common reasons for swelling are: 
1. Because baby is pressing on the veins in pelvic area, the venous blood from the legs returning to heart is slowed down which in turn causes swelling in both legs. This can be treated with using compression stockings and elevating feet whenever there is a chance. Also avoiding salt can be helpful.  Unfortunately this can last through the rest of pregnancy and will improve after delivery.
 
2. The most important thing is to check with your doctor and make sure your blood pressure is good and that you are not spilling any protein in urine which is an effect from high blood pressure called preecclampsia. This when ignored can lead to harm to fetus and mother.

I would highly recommend that you should check with your baby doctor if you already have not.

Avoid inactivity: Avoid sitting for long periods of time such as on long plane rides or car rides.  If you need to sit for a long period of time, it is a good idea to flex your calf muscles by moving your foot up and down to increase blood flow back to your heart from your legs.  If you have been prescribed a "blood thinner" it is important to continue taking your medication as prescribed by your physician.

Ultrasound: A thorough duplex scan of the legs, done by a certified tech, will distinguish between a blood clot and other conditions.

Not typical: If you are smoking cigarettes, taking hormones or birth control pills, or are at risk for blood clots, see your doctor.  If you have high anxiety and worry about  unusual things, see your doctor to help you with your anxiety.  Blood clots in general can swell, feel warm, or even throb but they do not have to have those symptoms. Swelling under the knee can be a bakers cyst.  See your doctor.

Possible: It sounds less-likely to be a clot (dvt), based on your activity level, though it can happen. May also just be a cyst or something else. Ultrasound should diagnose whatever's wrong, as well as a full history and exam. See your doctor, as it can be very difficult to diagnose based on symptoms alone.

Sonogram of the leg: Venous duplex doppler of the leg will be able to show you if there is blood clot.

Muscle strain: I would rest it and use a compression bandage on the calf.
