i am 44. my health is okay but i am in a wheelchair. i have been dairy free without calcium supplementation for over a year. i have started getting cavities all of a sudden. is osteoporosis highly likely at this point? my mom has it.

Bacteria: Probably more due to shift in your oral bacteria than osteoporosis.  Floss daily and start chewing xylitol gum. All cavities need to be filled or sealed

gum that has xylitol as the first sugar listed will help shift your oral bacteria to less cavity causing population.  You just need to take time to ramp up up consumption over 6 weeks to 6 pieces per day.  Sudden full dose can cause GI upset.

sister had high blood pressure and osteoporosis. giving up dairy products and calcium vitamins to lower bp. should i be worried for her?

It's a balancing act: Every patient has to weigh risks and benefits of therapy.  Osteoporosis is a serious disease with potentially devastating consequences.  She could compromise with reduced calcium maybe 600mg per day and vitamin d 800 units per day.  She should also, of course, take medication to reduce bone turnover or stimulate bone formation. She should discuss all of this with her physician.

i am on prolia for osteoporosis.  should i also be taking calcium and how much?

USPST says no: According to the United States Preventative Services Taskforce, they recommend against daily supplementation with VitD/Ca to prevent fractures, however, they do recommend taking Vitamin D 800 IU per day to prevent falls in women over 65.

Total of 1500 mg: Generally, your total calcium intake (diet + supplements) should be about 1, 500 mg, taken with meals in divided doses. You also need about 2000 units of vitamin d3/day. Check with you physician to make sure there isn't a contraindication to either of these meds. Most importantly, saftyproof you house and life, and avoid falls and trauma.

Citrate or carbonate: Either will do, if taken properly and in the correct amount, along with sufficient vitamin d. Check w/your physician.

Deficient in D, K?: Vitamin D is needed to absorb Calcium and K needed for calcium to enter our bones. Get your D level checked- optimal is 50-80. Try Vit K2 15-45 mg/day (not mcg). See below: Osteoporosis chances are lower first of all with consistent weight bearing exercise. They has been recent discussion on the benefits of calcium and vitamin d but i still would rec 500 to 1, 000 mg of calcium and at least 400 iu of vitamin d and a manesium supplement. No smoking as smoking can increase bone loss. Stay up on DEXA scans so bone density can be followed more closely.

Several things: Hi. Is your blood calcium low, normal, or high? Has your doc checked your PTH? High urinary calcium is a risk for kidney stones. If your blood calcium is high and your PTH is high and your urine calcium is high, you have primary hyperparathyroidism. If you have high blood calcium, high urinary calcium, and suppressed calcium, other (maybe bad) stuff is going on. Not enough space; other possibility

Osteoporosis: Yes but not enough. By the time you have osteoporosis calcium is not enough to treat it (is like using a band aid for an abdominal wound. For that you need stitches ). Talk to your doctor about osteoporosis medications. They may reverse it to normal bone density. If you smoke, you need to quit.

Multiple possibiliti: There are now multiple ways and effective treatments for osteoporosis and it depends upon your individual situation.  You need a good evaluation from a quality physician. Your serum calcium level is of no significance. If this is for you (a male) at your age, it would be unusual and should receive special expertise.
