should i be concerned about a  blood vessel that burst on my big toe? what causes this? i had this happen last year on my thumb.

Burst or Bruise.: I'm not so sure if your blood vessels are "bursting" or blood is leaking out as a function of bruising, caused by some element of mild trauma. The fact that it has happened twice in two years, especially on two trauma prone areas, is not as significant as it would be if this "bursting" was happening all over. At any rate, a thorough history and physical would do wonders to remove all doubt.

Likely harmless: If your are in good health and having no other symptoms of illness, then this is probably nothing to worry about. Possibly had some minor trauma to the hand that went unnoticed. Diseases that can cause bleeding from capillaries in the skin invariably cause other symptoms of illness as well. But see your doctor if you're concerned.

Vein bursting: If you are experiencing increasing amounts of bruising, there are a few concerns. One would be if your blood is unusually thin. This can be because of low platelets (the clotting cell of your blood) or a decrease in the amounts of clotting factors. You should discuss this with your doctor as simple blood tests can diagnosis this. There can also be structural problems with the veins causing this.

i have burst a blood vessel in the middle finger of my right hand twice now in the same month. it starts out as an itchy feeling and ends up purple.

This is often: an elusive symptom. It actually tends to occur more in women and is sometimes associated with the connective tissue syndrome Raynaud's disease.  This is a condition where small blood vessels constrict and may actually rupture such as you describe. It deserves a medical work-up to look for such conditions; you should carefully record the symptoms and circumstances and see your doctor. Good wishes:)

Allergic purpura?: Spontaneous purpura (small vessel or capillary hemorrhage) should be investigated by a dermatologist or a hematologist. What you are describing may reflect an allergic injury to your capillaries (leucocytoclastic vasculitis) or other blood/ blood vessel disorder

Yes if you have...: Most contusions/minor injuries will heal, but 50% of hand is bruised suggesting a bit more serious. If you have trouble moving the fingers, ?Deformity i.e. Crooked finger/hand bones, etc..Then you definitely need to see a doc. In the meantime, Motrin for pain and icing to reduce swelling before you get to see your doc. Good luck.

i have broken a bllod vessel in my thumb. i did a wk. ago and then i did again this morning.why and what can i do for it?

Thumb hematomas: Was it after injuring your thumb or did it happen spontaneously?  These small collections of blood (called "hematomas") typically resolve within 7-10 days.  If it occurred spontaneously, you should see your doctor to review your medications and run some simple laboratory tests.

Veins: Veins break secondary to dilation, pressure.  If the veins are weak either do to genetics or nutrition you can be more prone to breaking.  If you are on blood thinner, aspirin or nsaid that will cause issue.

Was it trauma?: If so probably clotted blood particularly if under finger nail = pcp can drain same ; probably save nail- don't wait!
