is it okay to burp up a little puke and swallow it?

Accepted Answer

Not frequently: If this is happening often, you need to be evaluated by a physician. It is not normal to be burping up food on anything more than a very rare occasion.

i swallowed a drink and got a chest pain that went into by back. the same thing happened when i burped. is this a cause for concern?

Sounds GI related: As described, this sounds GI related, especially with the history of belching.  Discuss with your dr. As it sounds like you may need to at the least avoid trigger foods that may irritate your esophagus or GI tract and cause "heart burn.".

i feel as if there is outflow of air/a mild burp everytime i swallow, (no acidity) i can almost feel it coming up the foodpipe & a knotting feeling?

Reflux: esophagitis and esophageal spasm. best handled with OTC PPI therapy: Nexium/Prilosec and certainly requires and examination.

NO: Tietze's disease or syndrome is a musculoskeletal problem and would not cause these symptoms.

3 day old. while he sleeps he occasionaly swallows air over and over like hes gearing up for a huge burp. he then burps,pukes,gags,gasps etc. :( wtf?

Any 3 DAY old: who is vomiting needs to be seen.  It may be nothing, but at this stage you don't even know for sure that his "tubes" are all working, and it would be a tragedy if he were to aspirate while sleeping on his back.  At least call the pediatrician and discuss.  Good luck!

See your doc: Even without discomfort, this may be from an inflammation of the stomach (gastritis).   You could try antacids (tums) or acid preventers (zantec, prevacid).  If these don't work see a doctor!

May get "heartburn": The air has either passed, without notice, or remains in your stomach.  Either way, it will come back out, be displaced out by other new fluids, or dissolve.  Either way, it shouldn't be dangerous.  It can cause nausea, vomiting, or "heartburn" however, so purposefully swallowing air is generally not advised.

Swallowing trouble?: Swallowing trouble can reflect problems when moving food from mouth to upper esophagus (tranfer dysphagia) or when moving food down the esophagus (transit dysphagia). Partial obstruction of esophagus may "hang-up" dry solid foods but typically allow liquids to pass. Motility disorders may "hang-up" both solids as well as liquids. Painful swallowing is especially concerning. Find &amp; treat cause.

Hi: If liquids pass you probably do not have a blockage as they would come back up too. You might have irritated your lower esophagus. Liquid antacids might be the best to try at first and dose four times a day. You might need to treat up to two weeks and Zantac (ranitidine) OTC would be easier. If your symptoms have been there longer then you need to seek further evaluation and treatment and possibly a scope.

GERD / H. pylori: Your symptoms are consistent with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).  The pain and burping is caused from acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus.  The stomach acid causes irritation to the esophagus which can lead to serious problems.  H. pylori is a bacteria that can live in the stomach and can cause GERD.  H. pylori can be cured.  Consider having a blood test for H.pylori.
