how do i know if my bunions are in fact bunions or gout? they don't change in size & both big toes are quite straight. bunions hurt occasionally.

Arthritis type: Bunions is a arthritis related to deformity.  Will be painful when pressure is rubbing on the deformity such as certain tight or types of shoes.  When arthritis exists inside of the joint as well then motion at the joint is painful as well.  Gout is related to a particular acid, Uric acid that build up in the blood stream that deposits as crystals in joint.  So X-rays blood test, joint fluid test.

A developing: Bunion is not painful like gout. Gout is pretty painful. Gout is usually red, hot and swollen. A doctor could "tap" the joint and if gout present would likely find monosodium urate crystals. A developing bunion would have a clean tap. Bloodwork might show elevated Uric acid but developing bunion would not have any influence on Uric acid levels.

Bone spurs from trauma can be commun in the big toe and many sports related issues can lead to mild DJD in the big toe. Ra is a DX that can be present though less likely to appear in only bone.

Pain in joint may be gout or pseudogout, where crystals are deposited in the joint, cause pain & inflammatn.
