Lots of bugs: Most insect bites cause local inflammatory reactions like itching and welts that are mild and resolve within a few hours without complications. Of course bee stings and cause more severe local and systemic reactions if you are allergic but any biting bug could cause a localized response. Mosquito bites are common culprits. Ticks, flies, and fleas are also implicated.

Itchy bites: Local reactions to insect bites can be very annoying, but rarely harmful. Scratching can result in secondary infections. Check for any ticks. With the exception of fire ants subsequent exposure is unlikely to cause more than localized itching again.

i have 6 lumpy bug bites that look like welts, but they all have a dry white spot in the middle of them. they dont itch/hurt at all! not hard either.

Bites: Assuming not red or discharge in the lesions, you can safely apply
Hydrocortisone 1% 3x/d locally and if itchy Benadryl 25 mg po q 6-8 hrs.
The white spot in center is the bite itself and not concerning unless spreads or 
infection occurs, see MD if worsens.

Allergist  might  he: An allergist  or dermatologist  may help clarify. You may be what  is called  a  bite reactor.

? Urticaria: and could chronic if that has been going on for sometime, please see an allergist, if not, could be just acute urticaria and will go on its own, OTC  antihistaminic, unless contraindicated, would help in the interim, good luck

But bites: The firm mass at one bite site may be a small blood clot(hematoma) from bleeding under the skin which occurred at the time of the bite. As long as these bite sites are not hot and reddened no secondary infection is likely and you can apply a cortisone type ointment to relieve itching. The hematoma may very slowly resolve.

my dad has high blood pressure. he has started getting big itchy welts- not bug bites. could this be because of the high blood pressure?

No, but...: It could be due to the blood pressure meds he's taking. What you're describing could be unrelated, but it could also be a side effect of certain meds, particularly Hydralazine which is often used for BP treatment.
