Yes: Bruising  generally indicates breaking of blood vessels.  This is serious business anywhere.  However the lower leg is considered the 2nd heart of the body and a malfunction of blood vessels can create a thrombus that can circulate to your heart and/or lungs and end you life. off and on hamstring pain for a year. this is the 6th "flare" with a bruise on my upper thigh. the pain is in the middle/bottom. strain or worse?

Investigation needed: It sounds like you may have a partially torn tendon which keeps giving you grief. See a physiotherapist or doctor who can arrange an Ultrasound scan of your thigh to determine the cause of pain. If the bruising is spontaneous then there may be further concerns of a bleeding into the muscle tissue and you may need blood tests to rule out a bleeding / clotting disorder

Bleeding: When you sprain the mcl, you tear the ligament. This caused bleeding in the location of the tear. You probably elevated the knee, so the blood travelled behind your knee and collected where you see bruising. That is completely normal. It may even become sore in the bruised area because of an inflammatory response.

Depends: it really depends upon the extent of the injury and how well you are able to stay off of it. Mild muscle strains can clear up in a few weeks. More severe strains may take months. Yes, bruising can occur. This is due to small tears in muscle fibers. Keep it elevated when possible and use warm moist heat.

RICE: Rest, apply ice, compression and ease off that leg. 
With time (1-2 weeks) and limited activity, may help you regain your leg function back. If it persists, see your doctor.

Bruises: One cause for onset of spontaneous bruising is platelet  disorder.  This can be on platelet function or number.  ITP or TTP are not uncommon.

Rule out illness: When infants/toddlers have bruises in 
unsuspecting areas, blood tests are done to 
rule out ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenia  purpura).
This is an autoimmune disorder, self-limited and 
lower platelet counts occur with the bruises. It should be monitored since if the Platelets drop below 10,000 they often need admission to a hospital or treated as an outpatient. You should follow up on the tests.
