Top foot hurts: sounds like it might be tendonitis or acute joint arthritis if no trauma to area.  Try ice, pain reliever if no medical reason not to.  If not better in 5-7 days, gets worse or you develop fever, please see your doctor.   Hope this helps.  Good luck,

toes/top of foot swollen. i can't seperate my toes. icing causes more pain/swelling. feels like it weighs 10 lbs. swells all the time. hurts every day for the past 3yrs. why is this happening to me?

Needs Full Work-up: This could be simple osteoarthritis, especially if you had an injury. Or rheumatoid arthritis. Or a nonunion fracture. Or poor circulation. Even renal failure.
Please have a evaluation with x-rays and exam.

tripped, fell, top of foot swollen for 5 days. painful, switches between mild and severe. what do i do? no other part of foot swollen.

Get an exam: You may have suffered a sprain, there are different grades of sprains, some severe may even benefit from casting.  See the Dr to get treated and also to assure you did not break any bones.  best wishes.

Infection?: This sounds like an infection -- maybe cellulitis (infection in the skin) or perhaps deeper, i.e. inside the foot. Or possibly a form of arthritis. Any of these can be serious if not quickly diagnosed and treated, so see a doctor ASAP. Good luck.

Maybe -but not only: Swelling on the top of the foot can be the result of several different things, including a stress fracture.  There can also be a soft tissue swelling from the surrounding tendons, ligaments, arteries, veins and lymphatics.  Hard to say without examination.

twisted top of foot in sandal stepping off curb. no ankle pain but left side top of foot swollen & hurts to walk. probably a sprain? what to do?

R-I-C-E: Rest it, ice it, immobilize it gently by using an ACE wrap (compression), and keep it elevated. You can try an Over the counter NSAID like Ibuprofen as well. Hope this helps.  See doc if not improving daily.

Not necessarily: But certainly possible. Tendonitits, midfoot exostosis, gout are all certainly part of differential diagnosis.

Get checked: This could be a bad sprain, but also could be a fracture.  See your doctor or go to Urgent care to have this checked.  Good luck!

You would need : To be evaluated in person by a foot doc. The question is to general and a clinical exam including palpation of the foot range of motion testing and possibly xrays to arrive at a correct diagnosis is warranted.
