Blood clot is likely: Blood clot as a result of trauma to the finger is a common cause;
 However an exaination by your doctor will help rule out other possibilities;

May be from injury: Sometimes trauma/injury to the nail can cause bleeding from under the nail, which then can cause brown areas under the nail or on the nail itself.  I would watch it and see if grows along with your nail. If it does, then you can eventually clip it off when you clip that part of your nail off.

Slim chance,see derm: though the chances are slim that this is a melanoma, you should be evaluated in person by a dermatologist. Sometimes, a bx of the lesion might be necessary to confirm the dx. Be sure that you provide an accurate  hx of the lesion to your dermatologist.

i have a light brown line on one of my nails (left index finger). it's been there for a while and now it looks a bit darker. but is still light brown ?

Many causes: It would be helpful to know how wide it is. I am assuming as well it is a lengthwise line? A lot of times these are like moles on the skin under the nail. Sometimes also caused by vitamin deficiencies, previous trauma to the nail, medications, other systemic diseases,or worst skin cancer. Maybe have your doc check it out and make sure nothing else serious is going on in your body.

Could be many things: Lines of pigment in the nails are often seen in individuals who have darker pigmentation, such as african american or darker latin individuals. Discoloration can also be due to trauma, or in less frequent cases, from a form of skin cancer called melanoma.  I suggest you have a dermatologist (if on hands or feet)  or podiatrist (if on the foot), take a look and evaluate it to rule out melanoma.

Melanonychia : Have been under sun lately for prolonged periods, any trauma to nail( is it your index finger or thumb) any new Meds? You will need to be seen by a dermatologist to examine width and intensity of color of line to determine if it could be one of the above causes or from a melanotic mole, Nevis or from a malignant melanoma which can be fatal.

Nail pigmentation : Linear pigmented nail streaks are quite common in more deeply pigmented patients.  Nail streaks such as these  are uniform,  brown colored and have thin diameters.  If a streak or steaks (lines)  are changing size , color or shape , have the nails examined by a dermatologist.

More history: If recent, maybe trauma? Could also be a pigmented lesion, ranging from a benign mole to a melanoma! so, need more history; how long there, trauma?
