Minor...: You can have some bleeding after a bronchoscopy.  This is usually very mild and shortlived.  Other concerns could be a pneumothorax or collapsed lung.  This is usually more of a concern if biopsies are done in the outer portions of the lung during the bronchoscopy.

Probably: Some streaks after the procedure or if a biopsy was done it can happened but for less than 24 hs usually.
If more quantity or persists get your pulmonologist to see you right away.

Many reasons: To evaluate the anatomy of the bronchioles. Other reasons include rule out infections, evaluate masses and in some cases, sample enlarged lymph nodes. Sometimes, we biopsy bronchiole wall to evaluate for immune disorders.

Yes: A bronchoscopy is a specialized procedure performed by a trained specialist, usually a pulmonologist to visualize & inspect the major airways and take samples of fluids, biopsies as neccesary, etc.
Procedure also to localize lesions, obstructions, nodes among other indications.

could a bronchoscopy tell what caused wegener's granulomatosis?

Accepted Answer

No it cannot: A bronchoscopy is useful for identifying that wegener's is affecting the lungs but it will not tell you the cause.  Wegener's is in a class of conditions known as autoimmune.  This is where the body does not recognize its own cells as being "self".  In turn an immune response causes inflammation in the lungs, eyes and sinuses (the classic locatioins in the body to be affected by wegeners).

But, in general, endoscopy is any study that looks inside your body, so a bronchoscopy is a type of an endoscopy...

going in this week for a bronchoscopy with biopsy. does this hurt?

No: When we perform flexible bronchoscopy we administer IV sedation and pain medications.  We also use local numbing agents to make the procedure more comfortable.  Despite taking multiple biopsies, almost all patient report no pain or discomfort.  In fact, they do not remember the procedure due to some of the anxiolytics that they  receive.  Some mild local throat irritation may occur for 24-48 hour.

are you as anesthesiesed during a bronchoscopy like you are for a endoscopy?

Yes: During bronchoscopy you receive conscious sedation.  You aren't out completely but are comfortable for the procedure similar to colonoscopy or upper GI endoscopy.

can i choke during a bronchoscopy? i am being sedated and scared if i start coughing i will start coughing and choke

Bronchoscope: You will not be aware of your cough or the bronchoscope if adequately sedated. Fairly benign procedure that is usually well tolerated. Good luck!
