No: Until recently, the only otc bronchodilator available was primatene, but it has been phased out due to concerns about the propellants (cfc). It was also more appropriate for asthma than copd.

Accepted Answer

Yes: If you have Insulin resistance or even diabetes metformin is fine to take.  Some people have lost weight on metformin, perhaps due to GI side effects.  I haven't heard that it can interfere with diet pills but those can be dangerous on their own.

See your doctor: Bronchodilators may cease to have an effect for a number of reasons - poor technique, expired medication, or most importantly, worsening underlying disease.  See your doctor right away and have them meaure your lung function before and after you use a bronchodilator to truly see if it is "working" or not.

It opens up airwys: When used in asthma it is one of the components of treatment that opens up the airways. It is usually used for rescue and is not a maintenance medication that treats the inflammation involved. It should never be used alone in the treatment of asthma. It is used in the treatment of copd.

Use of corticosteroid inhalers and longer acting bronchodilators is becoming more common to reduce the use, and thus side effects, of the standard bronchodilator albuterol. Other medications are also available to reduce the use of albuterol.

Use controller drugs: If by chronic cough you mean asthma then respiratory specialists want you to use bronchodilators (bd)  as little as needed. Not because they're dangerous (they're not) but because their frequent use means that asthma isn't controlled. When bd use exceeds 2x/week it's time to add an inhaled corticosteroid or leukotriene receptor antagonist. You'll be amazed how bd use decreases on these medications.
