i've had twitching all over my body for just over a month now. these twitches have become less frequent since they began. i also noticed i have very brisk knee reflexes. do i have als? 17 year old male, 153lbs, 5' 10"

i just recently noticed that my knees moves easily when i try to check my reflexes. just even a slight tap at both of my knees will elicit a jerk that is quite brisk. should i consult with a neurologist?

: There is no reason to see a neurologist if all you have is a brisk reflex.

my neurologist mentioned i had brisk clonus reflexes in my knee and ankles but said nothing to worry about that it is a variant of normal. this true?

Yes : It can be your normal.  It can also be sings of several other medical conditions.   Overactive thyroid comes to mind of one of the first things i would think of.

Not ALS: EMG findings would be different for ALS. Worry about something else.
Consider seeking psychological,or spiritual guidance to learn why you feel this excessive concern.

Not necessarily: About 10% of people do not have knee reflex. If both knees we are not generally concerned. If only one leg, then there is cause for concern.

Can be benign: Holmes-adie syndrome describes folks who have life-long pupillary and reflex responses which are aberrant but not indicative of any future disease.  Knee reflexes can be affected by lumbar stenosis, and peripheral neuropathy, but if you do not suffer back or leg pain, numbness or weakness, there is no cause for concern.

are the reflex reaction on your knees suppose to react on any part of the knee that is tapped?  the top and sides of your thigh suppose to react ?

Only patella tendon: The knee jerk or patella tendon reflex only occurs when the tendon is struck.  The sides do not elicit the reflex.

Testing nerves: This is testing your reflex arc and can give  the doctor information about nerve problems in your back.

why dont i have a knee reflex in my right leg but i do in my left?

IDK: Do you have any neuromuscular disorders?  Do you walk normal?  If so, the reflex should be there.  Sometimes can be harder to illicit reflex on one side in doctors office by hitting ligament/tendon just right.  If you haven't seen doctor, have him/her check it out.

can a jumpy knee reflex be normal, or is always a symptom of spinal cord problems?

Depends: If both knee reflexes and both ankle reflexes are "jumpy"  it could be a thyroid condition.  If only one knee is jumpy, it increases the chances that it is from some problem with the nerves from the spine.  If you have a weird ache near the outside of your thigh, that increases the chance it is from the spine.  Please get it tested more thoroughly.
