You should: Individuals with asthma unconsciously adjust their activity level to avoid symptoms. That does not mean asthma is controlled. If your doctor prescribed a medication to take daily you should, it treats the underlying inflammation and halts the progression of the disease.

Distress: The natural response to severe shortness of breath can reach panic level. I find that using anxiety to describe this reaction is extremely dangerous since it significantly downplays the urgency of the situation and may lead to administration of anxiolytics which could be detrimental.

Stress relief: Yes it can. It can mimic heart disease. Try and learn self relaxation techniques, like meditation or self hypnosis. Exercise regularly and avoid stimulants.  Get your sleep and eat small frequent meals. Some people get anxiety reactions from certain foods and additives like msg.  Your doctor might prescribe an "emergency pill" for anxiety like Propranolol or xanax (alprazolam).

Give it a try: If you sense the tightness &amp; peak flow is down it is a sign your prevention meds are not as effective as you would like. If the peak flow increases after reliever use you may wish to talk with your doc about your daily plan. If the peak flow does not improve after reliever use you should contact your doc.
