Cysticercosis?: Do you have neurocysticercosis(pork tapeworm )?  If so, whether or not treatment is necessary depends on a number of factors.  If the brain cysts are involuted/calcified, no treatment may be necessary.  Speak with your doctor about the next steps.

Okay, I'll bite: The parasites themselves will not usually be evident.  However, an inflammatory response reaction or unusual appearance of the body trying to wall off the parasite may be seen.  The bottom line is, do they cause a reaction in the body that will show up on our radiologic scans.

Accepted Answer

Maybe: It may, especially for worms depending on the size and if it's in its cystic form. Other times, it is picked up indirectly by the way the image enhances when contrast is injected or the effects it has on the surrounding tissue (eg localized edema).

Accepted Answer

No commonly: While an MRI might show bowel dilation or bowel wall thickening as a result of intestinal parasites, the diagnosis is made with stool analysis. Sometimes the diagnosis of intestinal ascaris worms can be made on ct/mri of the abdomen but this is very rare.

Not likely: An MRI is a test that uses a magnetic field rather than conventional radiation and so is real safe.  The largest contraindication/risk is if you have a metallic implant that might migrate in the magnetic field, but this is usually carefully screened before doing the mri.  Thank you.

Tumor or other : A "spot" on an MRI might be many things.  A proper interpretation depends on medical history and the particular appearance of the abnormality.  It might be a primary brain tumor; a metastatic tumor from somewhere else; a plaque of multiple sclerosis; a focus of infection such as an abscess; etc.  Consult your doctor for information specific to your brain images.

i have had a brain aneurism that was "clipped". is an mri dangerous?

Contraindicated: There are several things that cannot go in a mri, including implanted eye lenses, pacemakers, and vascular clips, especially aneurysm.

Accepted Answer

Commonly seen on MRI: Cavernous angioma is a cluster of tiny but abnormal blood vessels that can be seen in the brain or spinal cord.  Many people never experience symptoms from a cavernous angioma and may never even know they have one.   They do have a tendency to bleed and depending on the location and size, they can  cause seizures or other neurologic symptoms.

Accepted Answer

It is possible: Classically audiometric testing and clinical history will diagnose meniere's disease.  Recent literature now supports that mris under special protocols may detect endolympathic hydrops.  This finding may be associated with meniere's disease.
