Depends: If your orthodontist is correctly trained, has spent time to diagnose your individual problem with care, then it is perfectly acceptable to remove the first premolars. In doing a full work-up they have decided this will give you the best esthetic and functional results. There are "gray" areas, and if you are unsure, seek another opinion. We orthodontists are not offended by this, nor should we.

Clips: There are 2 small clips like a fork on the side of the braces near your canine the band goes on that on top stretching it to the same clip on the same side on the bottom. Repeat the process on the opposite side

Secondly, if there is not enough space to put the teeth in the desired position.  Ask your orthodontist to explain  the recommendations for your mouth.
