taking atenolol 25mg cut to 12.5mg & methimazole10mg for hyperthyroidism... is it normal for my heart rate to drop at night while i'm awak? beating between 48-56 bpm while on this medication? thanks?

: Beta blockers like atenolol do slow the  heart rate so your rates in the 50's at rest &amp; even lower when asleep aren't unusual. Does your heart rate increase appropriately when you're physically active? I wouldn't recommend heart rates below 50 when up and about as symptoms of fatigue, lightheadedness, low blood pressure &amp; shortness of breath with exertion can occur.

im writing on behalf of my elderly father. hes 70 years old and experiencing nighttime body twitches. he describes it like shivering. hes had two episodes this week. no medications. history of hernia. no fever. resting hr 95 bpm?

: if an Elderly Person develops symptoms he has not had previously best thing is to have him see the PCP/GP for evaluation. Maybe something very simple to take care of instead of prolonging it and making it become chronic and entrenched.

i have hypothyroidism and am past menopause. i take medication for my hypothyroidism and for anxiety. for the past 5 days or so i have had a headache and my pulse has been elevated to at times to 85 bpm. what might be happening?

: What is your heart rate normally? I ask because 85bpm is actually within normal range. The headache can be due to many etiologies including tension headache or migraine headache. It is probably time to call your doctor and get this diagnosed and treated-five days is long enough! If it isn’t getting any better, it’s time to see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment! Unlikely: I doubt you really have sinus tachycardia at 170. Although it's possible,  I suspect this is a supraventricular tachycardia.  EKG computers frequently misread this rhythm. Your EKG needs to be seen by a card-carrying cardiologist. While we're at it, you do too!

Kinda fast, relax!: Those numbers are a little fast, but relax! your heart rate is really not abnormal. There is a wide range of resting heart rates, and with exertion that number increases. Don't be alarmed if with more strenuous exertion, it goes up to the 150s or more. Instead, try to get regular physical activity!

It depends: on the conditions under which it is measured, the age  and the health and fitness of the individual.

Probably: 52 BPM should be a normal resting heart rate especially for someone who is on a b-blocker (cardicor) as long as you have no symptoms such as weakness, SOB, feeling lightheaded or ready to pass out.  If this is unusually slow for you or you're feeling "not right" I would see a doctor sooner than later to make sure the rhythm is normal.

Ok: For your age you should aim for less than 80/BPM. If tou exercise regularly your HR will slow down. As long as it is regular it is not dangerous.

is it bad to exceed 200 bpm when exercising?

200 BPM: This is unnaturally high - it means something is not right - so yes, you should stop if BPM is over about 160-170
