is there anything that you should or shouldn't do when having a bowel movement with an urinary catheter?

BM and catheter: When cleaning up after the BM, be sure to wipe the anal area from front to back in an effort to keep fecal matter away from the vagina and urethra. Always wash the labia and urethral area going from top downward.

i have a supra pubic catheter and have constant uti's that have bowel bacteria in them.  ileostomy as well. could i have fistula small bowel - bladder

Possibly: Urinary tract infections commonly have bowel bacteria, but if you are concerned and you keep getting them soon after finishing antibiotics it is worth having some testing to determine if there is a fistula.  May involve a ct, a cystoscopy, or a dye study.  Knowing more about why you have an ostomy and a suprapubic catch would allow a better answer.

i have meniges spine cancer, that in 9 months has not spread ,my bowel function is ok ,had my catheter removed at hospital bladder has not as yet returned to.normal in a week am using bed pans due to legs,how will i cope if permernant ?.colostomy?

Here are some....: I hate to hear but admire your coping ability to handle all what you have gone through especially for one at 78; I respect you. For your current care, I advise: keep up good nutrition and physical exercise and good hygiene even on the bed so to avoid bedsore; consider urinary diversion with suprapubic cystostomy with good care so to avoid urinary soiling, and possible colostomy if defecation....

UTI?: I presume he has spina bifida or similar problem.  If there is not much urine, then the symptom is called urgency and could be a sign of an urinary tract infection.  Please arrange to see his doctor for an evaluation of this problem.

Normal: There are a variety of aches and pains that come and go during the recovery period of a traumatic event such as an abdominal operation. These will eventually fade away in the coming 6-8 weeks. May have some residual. Also very common to become fatigued easily for weeks to months, but there is high variability of this. You can always check with your surgeon as well. Hope this helps!

Well...: If you are having a procedure that requires close monitoring of fluids, or there is a chance you might have difficulty urinating, there is a need for a Foley catheter, otherwise, if you can urinate in a receptacle, no there is no need.
Take into account that different Drs and institutions have different protocols and these are created with thought and prevention in mind

This is done to prevent bacteria from entering the catheter. This allows the administration of chemotherapy, transfusions, fluids, other drugs and also allows the many blood draws involved in leukemia treatment.

Aquapheresis: To remove excess salt & water from the body, in patients with fluid overload, such as in heart failure, liver cirrhosis & some kidney diseases.

Accepted Answer

Probably: Bowel movement regularity can vary from daily to every two or three days. Most people average at least daily but we are all different. I would encourage healthy diet and exercise with making sure you get appropriate fiber in your diet for colon health. If you experience any slowing down in your bowel movemente then start with gentle osmotic laxatives like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) or stool softener colace.
