i'm almost 32 weeks.  saw dr today. my bp was 141/92. got steroid shot for baby's lung. being monitored now for preeclampsia and borderline low amniotic fluid. dr said i'll likely deliver between 36-38 weeks. how long will baby need to stay in nicu?

Unknown: unfortunately it's hard to tell exactly how well developed a baby's lungs will be between 36 to 38 weeks. We know that at 37 weeks Kama most babies lungs are mature but even then we have cases where baby need to stay in the NICU for a longer. it's safe to say though that you should try to not worry about this since it is out of your control and may be increasing your blood pressure

i'm 32.5 weeks pregnant and have been told i have borderline low amniotic fluid at 6 cm. will i more likely have a planned pregnancy by induction? is it likely the baby can be go at least to 36-38 weeks?

Maybe: While that is low,  if  the AFI stabilizes, we usually let the pregnancy progress naturally.  If any other signs of distress show up, an earlier delivery may be indicated

i'm 32.5 weeks pregnant and i was told today that i have borderline low amniotic fluid and that i need to hydrate. will drinking more fluids correct this and if so, how soon can it get corrected through hydration? i'm worried about a preterm delivery

Maybe: Yes, hydration is important inn low amniotic fluid.  It will take a few weeks of increased fluids, if that is the problem.  Your doctor should  follow it with repeat ultrasounds.  Many women have very normal babies after reports of  low AF test results

Multiple things: Low amniotic fluid may happen for many reasons. Rupture of membranes or water breaking is the most obvious. Amniotic fluid can be low with dehydration. It can also be a sign of early fetal distress or fetal anomalies. As your doctor knows the whole story, he or she will be able to give reasons as to why low fluid may be happening in your case.

Oligohydramnios: Low amniotic fluid or oligohydramnios is a condition brought about by a decreased production of urine by the fetus either through a decreased placental perfusion or blocked urinary outlet, to name a few. It could also result from a ruptured amniotic membrane. One of the first signs of low fluid is a size-date discepancy of the growing uterus. An ultrasound will help to diagnose the condition.

No specific cure: Oligohydramnios occurs infrequently in pregancy and there is no specific cure.  Sometimes the amniotic fluid volume will increase with increased fluid intake (increased hydration).  However the cause of the low fluid volume is the important factor and the specific management will depend on that diagnosis.

Yes: You should certainly keep your appointments. Complication rates increase as the fluid levels decrease.

Before viability: Is your low amniotic fluid volume from premature rupture of membranes?  Does the fetus have kidneys?  Bleeding could be sign of impending late abortion or an abruption.  Are you contracting?  I would have your cervix evaluated.

low amniotic fluid at 39 weeks. should they deliver?

Accepted Answer

Probably: The amniotic fluid does start to decline by 39 weeks, but if the level is below what is normal (usually an afi of 80 or more) then delivery should be considered as there may be no particular benefit to prolonging the pregnancy beyond 39 weeks.  The complication rate for delivery will usually increase as the fluid level decreases.
