Alternatively, if the bone scan lights up along the margin of surgical resection, it could simply represent normal bone healing that is expected after an orthopedic procedure.

Observation: Generally, the boney tumor is excised and the defect in the skull is covered either with small metal plates or a special type of bone cement. It may be left "unfilled" if it is small.  There may be some small amount of growth in   of the surrounding normal bone that will fill the defect to a certain extent. One would then observe the region of concern with serial cts to watch for recurrence.

Rare: Malignancies of the jaws are uncommon. The most common is multiple myeloma (usually 50-70 years), but some tumors, like osteosarcoma and ewing sarcoma are more likely in children (<20 years). No matter -- they are very rare in most groups. There are some differences between the mandible and maxilla, but they are really not that significant.
