Bone chip: Start by first getting the ankle xrayed if nothing shows up than an MRI would show if you have a bone chip and if you damaged any soft tissue in your ankle.

Bad ankle sprain: Bad ankle sprain can take a while to get better.  U could have associated injury to the ankle cartilage or "high ankle sprain"that a MRI could provide more info.

Ankle chips: I would give it several months to see if the problem resolves.  Just because there are chips in there doesn't mean it will be symptomatic.  If it continues to be painful see a podiatrist for possible removal which probably could be done arthroscopically.

Ankle sprain:  Consider med eval. RICE. REST- 24 to 48hrs. Avoid activities requiring use of ankle. ICE- for first 2 days after injury, apply ice for 15 to 20 mins every few hours. A bag of frozen peas is good. COMPRESSION- Wrap foot, ankle &amp; lower leg w ace wrap. Make sure it is not so tight that it decreases your circulation. ELEVATE- elevate ankle above your heart.  Can prop on a pillow.

Ankle Sprains: Molly, repeated ankle sprains can cause extensive ligament and cartilage injury. You need to figure out when it happens, and if these times can be protected with taping, bracing, high top shoes, etc. A good sports medicine podiatrist or orthopedist will help. Xray: Probably best to get an X-ray of your ankle to rule out any possible fractures. In the meantime please rest, ice, elevate your limb to reduce pain and swelling.

Tendon injury: A sprain is an injury to the tendon of variable degree. If you have that much instability of the ankle then more than likely you have a significant ligament tear and an MRI would be indicated. See a foot and ankle specialist.
