Yes: A baby with Down syndrome can be diagnosed with a blood test. A mother carrying a baby with Down syndrome can also be diagnosed by blood tests on the mother's blood. The new test examines fetal cell-free DNA in mother's blood.

The blood test.: The blood test is testing for 3 copies of chromosome #21 in cells.  We normally are only supposed to have 2 copies of chromosome #21 in each cell (1 copy from mother, 1 copy from father).  If there are 3 copies found then the Diagnosis of Downs Syndrome (also called Trisomy 21) is made.

Difficult issue: Prior to the availability of chromosome(chm) and chm banding studies, these kids were usually classified by physical features.Errors happened occasionally.Many features are quite consistent among DS kids, yet they are also found occasionally in normal kids &amp; some DS kids have few if any typical features.Separating the regular DS from a mosaic  is impossible without testing.

Yes: There is a new blood test called maternit21 plus that is available that will spare a great deal of expectant mothers the possibility of miscarriage at amniocentesis. Lower risk: but still need, a special ultrasound and possible amniocentesis, to check fetal chromosomes.

Great question.: Amniocentesis takes a fluid sample and looks at foetal chromosomes. Down's demonstrates trisomy 21; edwards syndrome, trisomy 18. Others too. An u/s tells nothing about chromosomes, and there is not a contradiction of one test by the other. The chromsome changes are not artifacts.  If you do not want to know, do not get the test. Every couple needs to make their own choice; it's no one else's.

Hard to say: Tests are either screening or definitive. Since you only provided a number suggesting odds, this suggests 1:960 is a screening test that places your DS risk at 1 in 960 which is the basic statistical risk for anyone your age.(with no test) A definitive but more expensive test would be like the NIPP or amniocentesis that look at fetal cells and test their chromosomes (99% accurate)

Too sensitive a: Question.  It is not clear what you mean by blood test.  If it is a screening test, then you need to get additional tests, like amniocentesis done for a definitive answer.  Please discuss the matter with your doctor and i wish you and your baby the best.

Which test?: The definitive test is the test of the chromosomes of the fetus which is 100% accurate. But it is very rare that is + in a 23 yr old women. Why is he looking for that in you??  The risks and costs involved far outweigh the benefits to be gained. Talk to your doc about that!

Screening v definite: You didn't provide your wife's age, which determines general DS risk, but 1/190 is elevated in general. A definitive test will require that cells from baby be examined for chromosomes. In the USA they have a test as early as 10 wks where fetal cells are found in mothers blood &amp; studied(NIPS). Older method amnionic villus sampling or amniocentesis can do it. Unsure what is available there.
