Monitor closely!: Blood in sputum is usually due to a respiratory infection, with blood coming from superficial blood vessels traumatized by coughing, and should resolve as one recovers. However, other causes exist and the amount of blood expelled, and for how long, needs to be monitored closely. If it frank blood, instead of blood tinged sputum, or ever more than a tablespoon, please call your doctor immediately.

No: It may or may not be serious.  If the amount is minimal the most common cause would be bronchitis (inflammation of the airways).

Blood in Sputum: A tear in the blood vessels in the base of the tongue can cause bleeding, but it is not high up on my list. Go see an ENT for a complete history and exam.

Possibly nasal: You should obviously have that checked out. Any bleeding in the nasal cavity will also give you blood in the sputum. If you have had a bloody nose or even have irritation in the nasal cavity that could be the cause. Get it checked out in the coming week.

Bloody Sputum: I am not a fan of blood in sputum.  Do you smoke? Are you dropping weight?  How old are you?  It could be an infection or it could be worse.  It needs to be investigated further.  Could be a simple bleeding sinus or it could be worse.  I would check back with a doctor  to find out what is going on.  The blood and shortness of breath bother me...Check it out.

Yes: Your TB test is definitely very positive to TB and blood in sputum is always of concern.  At the least, i think you need a chest x-ray tofind out what is going on since a negative AFB in sputum does not always rule out active TB and there may be other conditions which can cause the blood in sputum.

No: It is important to find out the cause for blood in the sputum, especially is it is a repeated problem. The possible causes can be mild and once-only (certain viruses) but can also be an important sign of serious disease. Often a chest ct scan or other tests are needed to figure out the cause. If you are told it is due to "lung damage", find out what they mean and why it happened.

Bronchoscopy: Ask for a bronchoscopy.  A flexible camera that looks at the inside of your lungs and upper airway.  Can be done by a pulmonologist or thoracic surgeon.

what percentage of extensive calcified lymph nodes in pulmonary hila, combined with bright red blood in sputum are cancerous in nature?

Very low: Cancerous nodes very seldom calcify much. In my old home in Kansas City, many (maybe most) folks had some calcium flecks from old histoplasmosis. I'm very concerned though if you're coughing up blood. That's cancer until proved otherwise, and you're entitled to have calcified nodes from some other cause. Please get it properly worked up. Ask your DR for an: Accurate diagnosis. If all the tests are normal, it could just be irritation of the bronchial tubes from bronchitis.Have a TB skin test done. Hope all goes well !
