been tested in june, july, & this month for hiv, with all three negative. with the second one being blood drawn from my arm. should i still be worried?

No: The 4th generation p24 antigen/antibody test is very sensitive. Can detect HIV infection within 2-3 weeks of infection. The rapid HIV test is also quite sensitive. The vast majority of people with HIV will be detected within a month or less by the newer tests. The second test was confirmation, to a high degree of certainty, that you don't have HIV. The third test is further confirmation.

how long should a bruise from having blood drawn from my arm last?

10 days: Usually a bruise resolves in 7 to 10 days.  It will change color from blue to green to yellow as it revolves.

Local bruising: Ice today, the bruise will likely show tomorrow.
Just local, trauma and not uncommon .
You have had great luck previously.
Local clot can happen as well and should resorb.

i had blood drawn from my arm and now my arm and elbow is bruised and discolored.. should i be alarmed?

Possibly: Unfortunately, bruising after phlebotomy is a common side effect especially if you are on blood thinners. If the bruising continues to spread, becomes excessively painful, swells, becomes red & hot, a visit to your doctor is indicated.

my fiance had blood drawn from her arm then about an hour later her arm swole up badly and bruising around it, what could of happened?

Accepted Answer

Probably a hematoma.: The vein that had blood drawn from it likely continued to bleed creating a hematoma.  She can elevate the arm and apply warm compresses to the area to help the hematoma go away.  If her arm continues to swell, call your doctor.

When she goes for her next blood draw, have her hold pressure on the vein for at least 10 minutes after the blood draw to  help prevent this from happening again.

See doctor: You should see your doctor, as a hematoma/bruise should not be hurting 10 days after a blood draw. You should contact the facility where you had the blood drawn.

Leg pain: There is no relationship between drawing blood from your arm and shooting pains in your legs. You need to return to the doctor for an evaluation.

Not exactly: If the feeling is getting better, there is no swelling, no discoloration and you can move arms normally, give it time to heal. If any  of these factors is not applicable, contact the person/clinic that collected the samples.

I : I assume you had your blood drawn from the bend in the elbow, known as the antecubital space.   The biceps tendon inserts into the forearm bone, the radius.  On occasion, the needle can pass thru the front of the vein and then the back of the vein.  During the period where the tourniquet is on, when the needle is pulled back (since you cannot get blood when the tip of the needle is thru the vein), then the hole in the back wall of the vein will bleed, but the blood will be contained in the space where the biceps tendon is.  Afterwards, this causes pain and swelling.  Over the next few days, like any bruise, the blood will break down, causing discoloration around the elbow area.  Heating pads applied to the area will speed up the reabsorption of blood.
