Not normal: Period should not be heavy and i would not want to put up with heavy periods, if u were my pt in coral springs, fl, i would do a workup with pap, cultures , blood work and a pelvic ultrasound and then there are many txment options, no reason to suffer and if u have lighter periods  u will have more energy from less blood loss and feel better.

See your doc: It is possible the tissue is the uterine lining, but also may be having a miscarriage. See your doc for an evaluation

It can be.: Heavy periods with passage of clots is not normal.  A common cause might be uterine fibroids.  This should be evaluated with an exam and an ultrasound.  Also, ask about labs to check for anemia.

Safe for most: Any drug has potential side effects that cluster within certain risk groups. I would assume your doctor did a review of your personal &amp; family history, exam and testing before prescribing any medication. These procedures exist to reduce your risk. If the doc found you in the group of normal women at low risk that med would be used. If you have concerns you should discuss them with the doc.

Possibilities : Your period is heavy because tissue built up over the past 9 months. The bigger question is why you didn't have a period for 9 months. May be perimenopause, or you may have a thyroid issue. It would be good to get some labs done, and consider an ultrasound to check the status of your uterine lining, and your ovaries. I see it all the time, usually not serious but deserves to be checked out.

See below: Up to 30% have implantation bleeding that occurs at the time of thir expected period.  This is confusing to them as most do not know they're pregnant at this time.  Sometimes the bleeding can have clots.

The : The safest thing to regular your periods would be a Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud.  Your doctor can put it in in the office, then you don't have to take pills, and after about two months you will most likely have no vaginal bleeding for 5 years.  It is safe for people with blood clots in their past medical history.

Yes, but ...: During menstruation, it is normal to pass some smaller clots (say, dime sized). However, if you are bleeding profusely or passing large clots, you might consider visiting a doctor for an evaluation of your heavy menstruation.
