Catheter trauma: As the Foley goes thru the urethra and into the bladder it can cause abrasions, leading to bleeding and clotting sometimes.  However, if it is being inserted for renal stones or a hemorrhagic cystitis or other renal issue, it may be unrelated to the Foley catheter.  Usually Foley trauma just causes the urine to be blood tinged temporarily.  Patients pulling and tugging on their Foley can do this.

Possible: It is possible to urinate blood clots with any process that erodes or denudes blood vessels - from cancer to infection to bladder trauma or irritation from meds. It would be nice to see that the blood goes away with resolution of your infection. If it does not you need further investigation.

Possible, but...: After stent removal, some irritation in peeing is expected but should ease to fade over 1-3 days. As to having clots in urine, it may last off and on until the healing of mucosa of ureter &amp; bladder is completed. If not fading away as usually expected, one still needs to rule out possible UTI. So, if bearable, just watch, wait, and see; if not, seek evaluation, care, &amp; counseling,

Here are...: Sorry to see.... It can recur if the inciting factors are not removed. Indwelling catheter will surely induce bacteria to the urine in time (100 % in 2 weeks, no matter what we do.) How long does she need a catheter? That depends on how soon her bladder function may recover; but often, some patient might already have silent bladder dysfunction before CVA. So, ask Doc for detail timely due to....

: Blood clots can block the urethra. Drinking plenty of water after the procedure is important in preventing clots from doing so. Drink at least 8 glasses of liquids per day. Call your urologist if you can't void, develop fever, abdominal pain or continue to bleed briskly.
