what is the difference between bruises and blood clots?

Clot is worse: A bruise occurs when blood leaks out of capillaries into the surrounding tissue.  A clot is when blood coagulates within a vein or artery.  A clot can cause major disruption to blood flow and can be very dangerous.

is a hematoma from a bruise dangerous?  could this be a source of dangerous blood clots or something similar?

Accepted Answer

No: Bruises (hematoma) will change colors and go away slowly. You may get a scar lump due to vascular bleeding and healing.  It is not painful. There is no treatment for contusions, bruises, hematomas. They may look very ugly but are not dangerous. Whatever causes the bruise needs to be considered. If you can prevent another one best to use common sense and try to stay away from the problem.

i have a bruise on my leg that just showed up without injury. is that normal? i'm on a medication that can cause blood clots. should i be concerned?

Bruise: spontaneous bruising is very common and is not usually related to blood clots. It should disappear but if you get more you should let your doctor have a look at them

Possible: If your chin injury was bad enough to cause some swelling of the leg that could pressure the veins and cause blood clots.

No: Blood clots rarely, if ever, form in the arms. If the injury is due to domestic abuse, you should contact the police.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Possibly: Yes possibly,  and viceversa,  the presence of blood clots might sometimes manifest (even if as  early/ only/first sign) as easy bruising.

Accepted Answer

Not likely.: A bruise is not a sign of a blood clot.  It is a sign of bleeding from some type of injury usually. Are you on aspirin or other blood thinners?  If yes, then you are at increased risk of bleeding from any injury.

If you are concerned about a blood clot, you should see your Dr. who could do an ultrasound on the leg to check for it.

Bruising: Your grandmas,history of clots,may be a different cause,from age,dehydration,trauma,surgery etc.you are young,think back 24 hours,were you out drinking?did you accident ly,hurt yourself,if there is no reason,you come up with,seek medical attention ,to rule out bleeding disorders.

If the injury: Was bad enough to limit mobility then you would be at higher than normative risk for clots.

i fell in february of this year and got a really big bruise on my upper thigh. i can still see it slightly on my leg. i'm flying to the us in october. do i need to worry about the bruise and blood clots with such a long flight?

I wouldn't: It is quite common for bruise by-products--hemosiderin, etc--to remain visible in skin's superficial layers; it is HIGHLY unlikely that this affected or will affect the deep veins of the leg where worrisome blood clots develop. Flight precautions: walk around frequently in plane, stay WELL hydrated. Taking pre-flight aspirin and wearing compression stocking COULD be done, but probably to necessary
