Possibly both!: The blood clot forms from the base of the socket; additional clot may form from the surface.  Sometimes the blood clot in the socket breaks loose, exposing the bone in the socket.  This is called a dry socket and can be painful.  If this happens your dentist will likely place a sedative dressing over the socket to protect it until a new clot forms. Sometimes: Sometimes we see the clot sometimes its not visible as it is in the socket and there are times where the clot breaks down. If there is no pain then dont worry but if there is pain this may be a dry socket and you should return to the dentist to have it evaluated.

Would expect: your tooth pulling to have some light bleeding over the next 1-2 days, unless you stop eating or drinking.  If you continue to seep blood, like oozing, beyond 2 days, then you may need to check for von Willebrand disease, which is a clotting factor deficiency/ genetic defect.

Probably: Probably blood clot, but cannot be sure without an examination.  Report you concerns to the General Dentist or specialist Oral Surgeon who did your procedure.  He/she is responsible for your post surgical care.

How are you feeling today? Are you in a lot of pain? Is the area extremely sore or sensitive?
If not, then you may be fine regarding the dry socket concern you have.

Just because the clot was dislodged does not mean you will have a dry socket issue. Give it a day if you are not in extreme pain, otherwise call your dentist and have him/her evaluate your condition.

Gauze, pressure: Failed? Do you mean it is still bleeding? Use a dry sterile gauze or a wet tea bag over the socket and held in place with gentle pressure for 45 minutes. If you still have any concerns or problems, call the dentist who extracted the tooth.

Normal: Having a blood clot in the site of the extraction is normal and help with healing.  It should go away with time and i would suggest leaving it alone.  If you have a blood clot somewhere else, see your physician.
