as a kid i used to stare at sun for long times now i am 26 years old, can i go blind by the sun damage(caused at that time) now after a long time?

Accepted Answer

Doubt it: Your eyes would not wait 20 years to suddenly make you blind. What you have now is what you have left from such exposure. It was never a good idea to do that but if you care for your eyes now they should serve you well at their current level.

Accepted Answer

Retinal burns: It's definitely not a good idea to stare at the sun.  You could develop a burn in your macula which is permanent.  This would cause you to notice a blind spot in the middle of your vision.

accidentally looked at the sun directly for a couple seconds. can see fine, ,just hurts a bit. should i be worried about this? don't want to blind.

Accepted Answer

Probably no harm: Very difficult to look at the actual bright sun without your eye unconsciously shifting its gaze so no damage occurs.  Look up "Amsler" grid on the internet and see if your perception of the grid (following instructions) reveals any abnormalities (which I doubt).  Probably nothing to worry about.

how much time would i have to look into the sun to go blind?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Why would you do this?   The eye will try and avoid the pain of looking at the sun and the pupil will constrict as much as it can to limit the damage.  The eye will focus the sunlight on the most critical parts of the back of the eye and the time to have damage would depend upon light intensity (is it mid-day; is there smog?) and upon the steadiness of the fixation.

can looking directly at the sun cause someone to go color blind?

Accepted Answer

No: This is definitely not recommended.  It is uncomfortable and most would not due it.  It sometimes is done for religious purposes and by people under "the influence".  The eyes focuses the sunlight and damages a portion of the retina where it is focused in a non-specific way so all receptors are damaged and color blindness does not result, just a loss of a portion of the visual field.

No: However looking at the sun with your eyes open can do it.

i didn't realize that i had turn my baby's car seat towards the sun.  it was directly in her eyes and very bright. she is 4 mnths. will it blind her?

Accepted Answer

Not a problem: Babies at this age generally have the eyes shut much of the time.  And the reflexes are already in place to avoid staring at bright lights.  There is more of a risk to sunburn the skin in this circumstance than to the eyes.  Nothing here to worry about.

Do not worry: But be careful.  Sun induced retinal burning is usually instantaneous, and more often when image is magnified such as looking at sun through binoculars or telescope.  Especial risk with newtonian reflector device.  If you must visualize the sun, utilize special filter, or reverse imaging, never directly unfiltered.

Hard to say ?migrain: This could be occular  migraine. Ocular migraines are temporary visual disturbances that can affect one or both eyes. Though they can be frightening, ocular migraines typically are harmless and the visual symptoms typically self-resolve without medication within 20 to 30 minutes, without headache.

my 8 week old was staring out window possibly at direct sun for 2-3 minutes while changing diaper. could he be blind and can optometrist tell damage?

Accepted Answer

Optometrist can tell: Babies are attracted to light anyways so I would not assume he is blind unless there are other signs that he might be.  At this age he should be focusing on faces and starting to track, so if he is not doing that than you should have his eyes checked.  You can also try spinning him, if he could see he will try to focus and his eyes will move back and forth.
