if i have an upcoming bladder scan, what should i expect?

Simple test.: A bladder scan is a simple office test that uses an ultrasound to measure the volume of the bladder. Don't urinate prior to your visit...Wait until you see them and get permission first. You will lie back, and an ultrasound probe with some gel will be placed above your pubic bone. This may be repeated after you empty your bladder. This is different from a cystogram, which is a radiologic test.

if a bladder scan indicates a volume of 300mls in an elderly pt does there need to be any type of urgent intervention if the pt is not in any pain?

Depends: a lot of time I believe people don't feel any pain a little after 10 minutes to spend more than usual but Andy can do that I would have to see the patient as soon as possible given his med problem especially dm

i did a bladder scan and it showed echogenic urine?

Urine: It is important to know why the ultrasound was done. it could be due to UTI especially if you have urine related symptoms.

i had a bladder scan done today. results were 22ml right after urination. why isn't my bladder emptying all the way? should i be concerned?

Accepted Answer

No problem: Your residual urine is minute and I would not worry.  Only when residuals are greater than 150cc is there any real clinical significance.

The main reason: depends on your symptoms and clinical findings.  There are many reasons to perform a bladder scan(ultrasound I presume), suspicion of cancer is just one of them.

Bladder scan: There is a lot more to evaluate for 3 months of excruciating lower abdominal pain than just doing a bladder scan.  Return to your doctor to get a carefully directed physical exam and more complete imaging such as an abdominal/pelvic ct scan.

Prostatitis likely: Your symptom fits the profile of prostatitis.  If the prostate swells, it triggers pain. Such pain can involve the tip of the penis, groins, testicles, low back and perineum.
Urgency/frequency of urination and a variable stream may also occur.  You may notice worsening erections or a discharge from the penis with bowel movements.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a urologist.

if an incommunicative hospital pt is suspected of being in pain then presumably it makes sense to perform a rectal examination to rule out constipation and a bladder scan to rule out urinary retention can you think of any other reasons for doing both?

Depends: The rectal exam is also useful in determine if there is an acute bleed.  It is not used for constipation, but rather obstipation.  This is when so munch stole is in the rectum to won't come out.  Something doctors will diesempact the rate to for comfort

: No.  This is an external ultrasound placed over your bladder after voiding (just above pubic bone)

First : First of all you need a surgeon who is willing to do an ex lap surgery. The only thing i think they may find is possible scar tissue and honestly I am not sure this would cause all of your symptoms. It sounds like you may be dealing with ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), however the vomiting is not characteristic. Have you or were you ever exposed to any chemicals or lived near an industrial plant? Is it possible that you are ingesting a substance that you are unaware of? Consider your surroundings and everything you take in. Is anything different in your life since this all started? If you think of anything discuss this with your doctors; every bit of information may be helpful in solving this puzzle.
