Black stools: Black stools often are present when there is bleeding from the stomach or upper gastrointestinal tract. They also occur while taking iron supplements or peptobismol. I recommend that you see your physician who will perform a simple stool test checking for evidence of blood in your stool. Of course if profuse passing of black,tarry stools and weakness occur, proceed to the hospital emergency room.

Did he check for...: ...Blood? A simple stool test in the office can determine if your black stools represent melena (blood denatured by stomach acid) or just dark colored stools. In the meantime, particularly since bleeding can be intermittent, watch for signs of lightheadedness, weakness ; stop taking nsaid's, alcohol, tobacco. I anticipate further testing was advised, no?

: If you are having all of these symptoms, you need to be seen in an emergency room ASAP. Vomiting blood and blood in stools could indicate a GI bleed which can be making you anemic (low blood count) and this can lead to chest pain, even a heart attack. Pepto-bismol contains a little bit of bismuth and when the bismuth combines with the sulfur in your saliva and intestinal tract it makes a black colored substance which is called bismuth sulfide. This is the reason for the black stools. It is not unusual to take 2-3 days until the colon contents exposed to the medication fully clear.
