Black eye!: Black eyes comes from a broken blood vessel.  The causes are many, from trauma, thin blood (aspirin, ibuprofen, coumadin, (warfarin) ...) to other systemic causes such as liver dysfunction and lymphomas.  At age 27, it is very unusual and you should see an internist with a good systemic work-up.

Blood or pigment: Classically, a "black eye" is a bruise around the eyeball.  This is most often caused by injury but some other causes can be a vascular defect, birth mark, malignancy, altered skin pigmentation.  Best to get it checked out.

Up to 1 or 2 days: Black eyes may occur quickly with a direct impact to the eye. This happens because there is some bleeding in the soft areas around the eye that cause the darker color. Other injuries that fracture bones like facial and skull fractures bleed more slowly, and it may take a day or two before the black eye appears.

Mgt: He should be checked right away. At this age, injuries may occur on the playground or in daycare.
Any possible injury to the ocular area requires a visit to the ED tonight. 
If he has a fever associated, this may be due to inflammation or infection.

I believe it is: quite reassuring that the injury isn't too serious if you have no pain or bruising. I wouldn't worry about the swelling, which is the result of tissue inflammation and destruction, unless it continues to grow or function is significantly impaired: nasal obstruction impairing breathing, throat obstruction, etc. If you don't have pain, I wouldn't take ibuprofen just for swelling. Icing might help.

our blood become thinner and we becomes easy to bleed.
our skin become more fragile and easy to bruise.
simple itching that will make you rubbed your eye while you sleep, will leave you with a black eye.
do not worry everything is OK.
apply ice, and it will go away.

Black eye: If there is swelling, you can use cold compresses or icing it.  Once swelling goes down, you can use makeup to cover it up but it is going to take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to resolve.

See your ophthalmologist if the vision is disturbed or you suspect major tissue damage like an orbital bone fracture.
