Menorrhagia: Heavy bleeding, or menorrhagia can be due to a variety of reasons.  Most common is hormonal.  Endometriosis can be a factor.  In addition, thyroid, pituitary glands, as well as weight (too thin/heavy), rarely vonwillebrand syndrome.  Not usual in someone at 19, a lesion such as a polyp or fibroid can cause as well.  Clots just mean excess blood.  May want to consider workup with gynecologist?

Dysmenorrhea or: painful periods are not uncommon in young women and can be primary,  not having an underlying cause,  or secondary, related to infection or possible endometriosis.  It is recommended to get a Gyne exam who may also recommend medication.  Some women find that suppressing periods with hormones such as low dose birth control pills gives relief of pain, even though they do not need contraception.

Hormonal treatments such as birth control pills, Progesterone treatments and the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud are effective reversible treatments that will help many people. There is also a drug called Lysteda that contains no hormones which will help others. If you are done having children discuss the option of an endometrial ablation. In some cases a hysterectomy will.
