my 2 1/2 year old son has a 3 inch light brown spot on the base of his spine. when he was younger, that spot was always a dark blue/black.

Accepted Answer

Benign: A midline lower back discoloration in children is common in Orientals and also seem less often in caucasians. Love him and kiss it better. Not to worry.

my one year old son has a blue/black spot on his left toe nail. it has been there for like two months.

Accepted Answer

Bruise: He likely hit his toe &amp; accumulated blood beneath the nail. When this happens it takes a long time for the stain to grow out. Kids toenails grow at 1-2 mm/mo so it can take quite a while for it to move to the top &amp; allow you to cut away the stained part. It is not a reason to worry.

there is a blue/black spot under my big toenail and i don't know what it is. i removed my nail polish today and saw it, and am now very concerned. ?

Photo documentation.: A black/ blue spot under the nail in a 16 year old is probably nothing more than a bit of dried blood trapped under the nail. This could be the consequence of a minor bump of the toe of a pressure injury. Without actually seeing it, I guess it could be something else, but I doubt it. To remove all concern, you might  have a physician take a look at it.

i have this small blue black spot between my lower lateral and central incisor teeth. evrytime i brush my teeth it will bleed. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Not normal.: If this does not resolve in a day or two, please see your dentist, a periodontist, or an oral surgeon for evaluation. Your description suggests some trauma to the gums and it should disappear soon. Otherwise, it is a situation that needs professional investigation.

Hard to say: This is not possible to determine without having an exam by your Doctor. If the spots have been there for a long time, then maybe it's nothing to worry about. However, if have recently had unprotected sex with a new partner, or you are having symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, it may be a clue that you have an STI. Either way, you need to see a Doctor to learn what these spots are.

i noticed a firm, purple/blue lump on my leg, about four inches below my right knee about six weeks ago.  no pain, but some itching surrounding it.  has grown larger, and there is a black spot in the center. two more lumps have formed around it?

: Insect bite?  Contact dermatitis?  Toxicodendron dermatitis (eg., poison ivy)?  Impossible to tell without seeing.  Check with physical or virtual doc

Possibly.: If they look like bruises, and they are in places you did not injure, they should be investigated soon.

Unusual: If you are on blood thinners, these could be bruises. They could also be venous lakes (essentially small varicose vein type lesions) or they cold be nevi (moles). It would be best to see a dermatologist or your physician for an evaluation.

Not normal: Bruising may be from a break in the bone or  a torn joint capsule of the great toe. Have it at least x-rayed. An MRI may be required. Ice, rest 
anti -inflammatories until those studies are completed

Consider being seen: This may be erythema nodosum. It's not a problem by itself but may point to something else. At a minimum, get your next physical exam in a couple of months.
