Yes, It's Possible: Yes, it is possible. There are several different forms of dark-pigmented spots which can occur on the tongue or other areas of the mouth. If you have had the spot since birth, and it hasn't changed, you have a very high chance that it's something harmless. But, it should be checked anyway. If the spot developed recently,  or changed, you must have it checked right away; that can be very dangerous.

Depends..........: The answer depends upon the location of the birthmark. Strawberry birthmarks in the midline of the body almost all resolve by around 5 years of age. Birthmarks lateral to the midline may not completely resolve without some help (laser, intralesional steroid injection, beta-blockers).This should, of course, be discussed with your child's physician.

Probably not: Sometimes we see traits including birthmarks in similar areas in our children. In general though, birthmarks are not one of the more common inheritable traits.

Accepted Answer

Yes and no: By definition, a birthmark is present at birth. However, there are a variety of vascular (blood vessel) birthmarks that tend to grow faster than the baby and reach their peak in relative size and prominence around 8-12 mo. Many would accept them as birthmark variants since they exist (unrecognized)under the skin from birth. That said, marks that come up around 9 mo are usually labeled differently.

You can't: If it is in the genes it will show up on the baby. I often see a pattern of storks bite marks in several family members or they may come up  as a new finding . I've never had a parent complain about the mark in > 30 years of practice. Given what I have seen over the years i'm just happy when the parts are ale there & seem to fit.

Yes: Yes, all skin requires sun protection if your child is going to be outside for any extended periods.

Accepted Answer

Some do some don't: There are a variety of red birthmarks that appear on babies. Their eventual status varies with type & location. The typical "storks bite" on the back of the neck persists through adulthood while "angel kisses" on the eye lids generally fade as the skin thickens. Strawberry marks increase in size & prominence for about a year before shrinking back & may fade considerably. Ask your dr for specifics.

No: Most birthmarks are harmless, but you should point any that you find out to your baby's doctor at the next routine check up. Birth marks, despite the name, don't always show up right at birth. Many develop in the first few months. They can be red, blue, shades of brown, black, white, or yellow/orange. There are a few which may require seeing a specialist, usually a dermatolgist.

Strawberry marks: are usually varieties of capillary hemangiomas. These vascular lesions are generally present at birth, enlarge for several months, then regress up until approximately two years of age. Persistence of these lesions beyond early childhood are sometimes addressed with laser or other treatments. A dermatologist can help you sort this out.

Varies.: Whether or not a “birthmark"  should be removed at all depends on the specifics  of the birthmark.  The appropriate age for removal, if necessary, will also vary depending on the specifics. Therefore, hard to answer your question precisely;  best  answered by your pediatrician and/or dermatologist.
