Abdomen pain?: Depending upon your medical/surgical history you might need an abdomen ct scan to see us you have a vascular disease of the descending aorta or kidney pathology.  If the abdomeb ct scan is normal then if you are physically active thus could be abdomen/ribcage strain. It is important to rule out the abdomen diseases before treating this as a strained muscle.

Most likely: Bilateral flank pain can be from kidney stones, infection, pneumonia, rib pathologies and other causes.

Muscle strain is the most common, however.

Urine check/culture: You may also have a type of cough variant asthma, which has little to do with fluid intake-get examined.

Mgt: It is imperative that you see your local ED. They can obtain a chest radiograph and labs, including a urine analysis.

1 wk bilateral flank pain, now a big mass deep in right abdomen ~2" below ribs. scoots upward if i squeeze my side. stools have been black/maroon but are occult neg. no other (new) symptoms. advice?

You need some tests.: Regardless of the stools being negative for occult blood i would strongly recommend starting with a urine, cbc, metabolic panel and ultrasound of the abdomen. These would not be very expensive. Other tests after these initial ones would then lead to considerations for a colonoscopy or ct of the abdomen. You need more information.

2 days of bilateral flank pain that's off & on, smelly urine, and nausea. should i go to the er or wait till morning to get appt? drink more water?

ER: Go immediately to the er. Sounds like infection from either pyelonephritis, kidney stones , or some other cause but waiting too long and increasing the infection may lead to urosepsis which can be very serious.

march ct shows bilateral mid-pole 6mm kidney stones (grown from 1 & 2mm from ct in sept). ive had multiple utis with flank pain that subsides w/antibiotics. would urologist consider removing the stones? worried they will grow & cause more problems?

: The key is to find out what kind of stones you have as different kinds Ned different treatment. I the mean time increase amount of water you drink. Ask about lithotripsy.

Flank pain: Right flank pain can be caused by kidney infection, kidney stone, muscle strain, pinched nerve, or referred pain from an abnormality in the colon or pelvic organs.  If it persists you should see your physician for an exam and other testing.
