how can i know if this is an ingrown toenail on my big toe?

You will have pain: Due to poorly fitted narrow tipped shoes outer edge of  nail big toe grows into flesh, causing pain, aggravates by wearing shoes.Some times you can see red flesh, pus at the edge of nail.  It is time to see  your  dpm   or md ( most of md s do not perform toe nail surgery ) to help you.

See a podiatrist: If you are constantly getting ingrown nails, seek out a podiatrist. It is a simple procedure to correct.

Unfortunately, : Unfortunately, there really isn't much you can do.  In your injury, you apparently traumatized the nail matrix, the "root" from which the toenails grows, so now it's regrowing differently.

If you have no pain, i would leave it alone.  There is a small chance that, over time, the nail will straighten out, but there is also the chance, over time, it will get worse.  But again, if you have no pain, i'd leave it alone.

If you do have pain, or the nail is puncturing the skin or there is an infection, then go see a podiatrist.  In some cases, all that's needed is to trim away the piece of nail sticking in your toe.  This is usually temporary.  If it continues to be a source of pain or infection for you, you might need a side, or even the entire nail permanently removed.

First try: warm soaks , wide shoes , if you are not getting relief  see your doctor or podiatrist , may need  a small surgical procedure , the side of nail that digs  into flesh  ned to be removed to give you the relief ..

Excise nail spicule : It has to go or it will get more annoying and possibly locally infected given your activity. It may be just a simple tiny piece but that's all it takes...

Genetics: There is a familial tendency to ingrown toenails. If this is recurrent see podiatrist dom for permanent procedure with phenol to narrow nails.

In the Details.: Some toenail surgeries will allow the toenail to regrow. But, there are procedures that permanently stop the nail from regrowing. This variation is usually explained before the surgery is done and your consent given. Having said that, some times the nail root is stunted during the nail removal procedure. This can temporarily slow regrowth of the involved nail. You might check with the surgeon.
