EBV: Infectious mononucleosis, related to the Epstein Barr Virus, or EBV, has a pathogenesis related to spread through B cells and can be related to B cell lymphoma but this is the exception, not the rule, and EBV is almost ubiquitous in the human population without lymphoma. Concern for lymphoma involves painless weight loss,night sweats, gold standard test is imaging/ lymph node biopsy.

Q: serum protein electrophoresis showed elevated beta-2 globulin, 5.3 g/l (reference range 2.0-5.0 g/l). what further testing could be done to rule out multiple myeloma, aside from immunofixation and quantitative immunoglobin?

Probably not: The presence of more than 10% plasma cells in the bone marrow is supportive of the diagnosis.  Once the diagnosis is confirmed the level of b2m is very important in terms of prognosis.

More info needed: Unless you are on coumadin, (warfarin) the INR which is normal, does not matter.  The PT is not documented and the APTT does not have a result listed.  The beta 2-microglob
ranges are laboratory specific and your doctor who ordered the test should be able to better advise you.
