Physical therapy: Working with a physical therapist to increase range of motion, strength and improve gait is generally recommended.  Patients usually start with a walker and progress to a cane or no assistance with time.  Early weight bearing is encouraged in most cases.

None: The best prevention against an osteoporotic hip fracture is good bone and avoiding falls( balance).Weight- bearing exersise Is key. So is Ca/ Vit D / Actonel (risedronate) etc. but will not prevent hip fx.Bone densitometry should be done yearly. Or every 6 months for those @ greatest risk ( TAH pts, white females &gt; 70 etc).no 'garment' can prevent hip fxs.and in 21yrs.of pvt practice I've treated hundreds.

Needs evaluation: One can worry about re-fracture or maybe it is due to another hip problem such as arthritis. This needs an evaluation.

The social worker: I would speak to the social worker in the hospital where the fracture was diagnosed and first treated.  The hospital social workers are aware of all local rehab facilities in your area, and you can ask their opinion as to which facilities would be most appropriate based upon your individual patients needs.

20 % risk : A lot of hip fractures occur in people with multiple medical comorbidities. These people are already in a weakened condition, plus hip fracture can cause depression and people can give up. The better medical and physical condition you are in when you have a fracture the better you will do.

Geriatric hip fx: The fracture itself isn't what is life-threatening but the events following the fracture and immobility are. Being immobile and elderly leads to pneumonia, DVT, PE, MI, etc. This is why it is critical to treat a hip fracture surgically within 48 hours of the fracture to reduce morbidity and mortality as has been proven in multiple studies.

can a hip fracture cause your leg to go numb?

Yes: Hip fractures can certainly make your leg go numb, as there are many nerves running down your leg, many of them superficial that conduct sensation.  You should go see your doctor if you have numbness and suspect a hip fracture.  Good luck!
