Nasal steroids: The nasal steroids as a class are the drugs of choice. None of them is the best. Patients often like one better than the other so it is reasonable to try a few.

Some patients get good relief with nasal antihistamines.

Nasal sprays: Initially you want to start off with nasal corticosteroid nasal sprays.  If  this alleviates the symptoms then you do not need to do anything else.  However, if you have some relief, then try as needed  decongestant.

i am sick with a virus and i nasal spray for allergies and yesterday when i used the nasal spray it hurt and it has before. why would it hurt now?

Accepted Answer

Irritation: If you aim your nasal spray towards the middle and center of the nose, you may experience some irritation (assuming that you are using a nasal steroid).  If you are using nasal decongestant sprays, repeated uses tend to cause irritation.  Do note that nasal spray for allergy does not work on a cold.

Nose spray: You do not mention what nasal spray you are using, if it an over the counter one stop it immediately, . If it is prescription use it according to the way it was prescribed. 6 times a day is too much, see an allergist about your nasal symptoms.

i am using a corticosteroid nasal spray for allergies but now my tonsils feel irritated and dry. no signs of swelling. could the spray cause it? if yes should i discontinue it? i can't get in touch with me ent until monday.

Steroids are drying.: Assuming this is not an early indication of a tonsil infection (tonsillitis), it could be an effect of the steroids, which do have a drying tendency.  Remember, even though they are sprayed nasally, the steroid can end up dripping down the back of the throat and upon the tonsils.

Talk with your doc: The best for nasal allergies is a corticosteroid nasal spray (flonase, nasonex, (mometasone) rhinocort, etc.) that must be prescribed by your doctor. These all work about the same, though some people may respond better to 1 vs another. Dryness can be helped by otc saline sprays. Otc nasal rinses (e.g. Neti pot) can help as well. Avoid using otc decongestant sprays for more than ~3 days at a time. See your md.

Allergy meds: Over-the-counter (otc)medications such as Allegra or zyrtec or their generic equilavents work well.  Nasalcrom is an otc nasal  spray which helps allergy but has to be used often (5x/day).  Nasal saline spray is helpful also.  It cleans the nose of allergens, like dust and pollen, and acts as a mild decongestant.  If symptoms persist, they may not be allergy--see your doctor.

Depends...: Different insurance companies have different preferred brands.  Nasal sprays can have different medicines; .Common ones are saline, steroids, or antihistamines.  Fluticasone nasal is one generic steroid available in the usa.  Some drug companies offer "drug assistance" programs and "discount cards". Call your insurance company, ask a local pharmacist, or search for discount cards on the internet.

how long can i use zicam allergy nasal spray for?

Recall concern: Fda posted a warning concerning intranasal zinc ..."while Zicam also makes zinc-containing oral cold remedies, these are not subject to this warning because the development of anosmia appears to be related to the intranasal application of zinc."  anosmia is the liss of smell. You should consult your physician regarding this warning.

i've been prescribed dymista, an expensive brand name allergy nasal spray drug. is there a cheaper, generic alternative that does the same thing?

Accepted Answer

Individual drugs: It's fluticasone propionate and azelastine combo. First is OTC now, second needs Rx, but cheap; call doc for a script. I know other docs have their patients mix them (or other steroid nose sprays) together in same bottle, but that's totally off label - and I have no idea if they are compatible, so I personally do not recommend it. Just use one, then use the other.
