i want to know what should i use on my skin for dryness. i stopped using tretinoin because it dried my skin. what moisturizer should i use for that?

i use a pricey .03% retinol cream on my face. would the benefits be the same if i mixed generic tretinoin cream with a moisturizer?

Difficult to say: Not all moisturizers are equal and you should use a non-comedogenic mositurizer. Furthermore not all delivery vehicles or preparations are equivalent. Microspheres allows a time release effect that is more gentle on skin. Furthermore separation of the two components allows you to increase the potency as you build tolerance. I am a fan of the component approach albeit the inconvenience.

can i use collagen boosting moisturizer above the retinoid (retacnyl tretinoin) ?  also, is the use of a retinoid compatible with breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Not while breastfeed: Don"t use a retinoid while breastfeeding - it has never been studied and could be harmful. The other stuff is a waste of money as these creams and lotions have no way to penetrate the skin and "boost" collagen.

can i use la roche posays double repair moisturizer(not the spf one) as the night moisture for my prescribed acne treatment(azelaic acid, tretinoin and clindamycin phosphate?

: Yes, you can and I assume you apply the other lotions during the day. Take care.

can i use a sulfur ointment twice a week if  if i use other acne products? i use a benzoyl peroxide wash in the mornings (it's gentle) and an otc azelaic acid suspension. at night the cleanser and moisturizer are gentle because i use tretinoin.

Caution mixing: Benzoyl peroxide can be combined with Sulfur, Adapalene, Clindamycin, and Salicylic Acid. Sulfur medications can cause a severe allergic reaction. Do not use Benzoyl Peroxide/Sulfer during treatment with tretinoin (Altinac, Avita, Renova, Retin-A, Tretin-X). Using these medications at the same time could cause severe skin irritation even if used at different times of day.

how long after cleansing should i apply tretinoin? how long after tretinoin can i apply moisturizer without lessening the effects of the tretinoin?

Nearly immediately: The retin a (tretinoin) can be applied nearly immediately after cleansing and exfoliation. Typically this is performed at night to allow penetration into the skin. Moisturizer may be applied afterwards but is more commonly applied in the mornings with sunblock/sunscreen.

After: Wash face with a gentle moisturizing facial cleanser. Then pat dry (don't rub). Apply tretinoin, gently massaging into skin. Wait about 1 minute then apply moisturizer (if it's your daytime moisturizer, make sure it has sunscreen contained within it.).

Too much good thing: Differin (adapalene) and tretinoin are both retinoids, they should not be combined- it's too much of a good thing.  The moisturizer will be helpful after applying your retinoid.  Good luck!  retinoids are fda approved for acne and fine lines.

RetinA can be drying: It is the retin a (tretinoin) which is drying. You want to be sure you are on a cream or micro-gel, but not the gel formulation. Stop it for a few days, apply 1% Hydrocortisone cream twice a day, then resume the retinoid, starting at every other day.
